Massimo thought back to his terrible dates with Aria. Hadn’t she seemed different? Wasn’t texting her for a while like texting a completely different person?

Later, Aria had managed to mimic Massimo’s wife’s original text style. But she hadn’t started with it. She hadn’t sent nearly enough messages and all of them were short and full of bragging–nothing like the constant conversation starters his wife used.

Then who was Massimo’s wife?

Massimo scrolled through more messages, looking for clues. He was surprised when, without warning, he saw several explicit pictures.

“I miss you. Do you miss me?”

That picture was too zoomed in on the woman’s covered breasts to be helpful for identifying anything but his wife’s skin tone. He expected them all to be equally useless, so he quickly scrolled through them trying not to look

“I want to see you. Don’t you want to see me?”

Massimo scrolled back to the picture above it. That was a full length picture!

The woman’s face was covered by her phone, but Massimo recognized the overall form.

It almost looked like Elena. The woman had the same frame and hair style–but that was impossible.

Yet Massimo zoomed in on the picture to see the woman’s shoulder. There was a light scar there, exactly where Elena had gotten shot when she saved Massimo’s life.

That was damning proof, wasn’t it? Logically, all the evidence pointed to Elena, not Aria, being Massimo’s mystery wife.

But that made no sense! Massimo knew who Elena was married to–the prosecutor Joshua Miller. And yet, certain things only made sense if she wasn’t actually married to him.

When had Elena actually bothered to talk about Joshua? Sure, she was professional, but why would she side with Massimo over her husband? Joshua and Elena certainly knew each other, but Elena didn’t appear to be in love with him.

What were the odds Elena mentioned the same movie that he recommended to his wife, and that they both had extremely favorable opinions of it. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind wasn’t an ancient movie, but it wasn’t incredibly popular these days either.

Also, Aria’s deception only worked if Elena was the real wife. Aria could’ve easily stolen Elena’s dress so that she could make the in–person meeting–and later, when Massimo got suspicious, Aria could’ve stolen Elena’s phone to copy her texting style. Elena probably told Aria plenty of information about her mystery husband beforehand, allowing Aria to lie convincingly!

Most of all, didn’t they both talk in similar ways? They both were relentlessly stubborn and optimistic, as well as incredibly clever?

It made too much sense.

Massimo exited out of his texts. He dialed his grandfather’s number and called him.

“Massimo?” Fabio asked. “What-”

“Describe my wife,” Massimo ordered.

“What? Why are you even asking such a thing? Have you finally lost it, you crazy-”

“Fabio,” Massimo snapped. “Just do it.”

“Fine,” Fabio relented. “She lives in the same apartment complex as I do. She’s the kindest woman you’ll ever meet as well as smart, and a damn good doctor…”

For once, Massimo didn’t cut off his grandfather. He let the old man ramble, talking about the woman’s personality and finally making his way to her physical characteristics.

The description, though ungodly long, matched Elena Vitale perfectly.

“Tell me something,” Massimo said. “What is the name of my wife.”
