Chapter 154
Elena immediately stopped swimming and stood up. Massimo himself even raised both eyebrows when he spotted Elena. She took comfort in the fact he also seemed surprised to see someone else here.
“Sorry,” Elena said. She walked to the edge of the pool and climbed the metal ladder so she was no longer so far away from Massimo. The loud drip–drip–drip of the water droplets falling made Elena even more self conscious.
Still she persisted. “I didn’t know you wanted to use the pool today,” she explained. “I can leave-”
“Why?” Massimo asked casually. “It’s a large enough pool–we can both use it.”
Elena couldn’t think of an objection to that.
Well, she could, but it was hardly appropriate to tell her boss that this scene was reminding her of the time she walked in on him in the bath. And if he wasn’t thinking of that, Elena didn’t want to remind her of the most embarrassing moment of her life.
So she muttered out a quick, “I suppose that’s true,” and slowly headed back into the pool with Massimo close behind her.
Elena was trying to look at anything but Massimo. He had taken off his t–shirt as soon as he got in the water, and Elena had accidentally noticed that Massimo’s muscles had only grown and gotten more defined since the last time she’d seen them.
That thought made her cheeks burn–she was trying to be a professional, damn it! She can’t be ogling her boss like this!
Elena tried to take deep, calm breaths. She would just wait a few minutes, then make up an excuse and leave. Surely she could survive a few minutes of awkwardness so that she wouldn’t make things more weird between them?
That plan was dashed early on. Massimo, it seemed, was taking this chance encounter as an opportunity to practice making small talk.
“I noticed in Florida, but you swim rather well,” Massimo observed, making Elena incredibly self–conscious. ” How did you learn?”
“My step–mother,” Elena said quietly. “She was trying to teach my half–brother, but I ended up getting dragged along, too. She took us both to the beach every Saturday in the summer–until I went to college.”
Elena didn’t have many fond childhood memories. But those short beach adventures were the closest things she had.
She knew her step–mother was just trying to show off to the other rich mafia families who frequented the beaches–silently pretending to be the perfect little family. Elena knew her step–mother was likely hoping Matteo would make friends with their children and be able to mooch off those wealthy families‘ successes. Elena knew her step–mother only dragged her along on the off–chance she caught the attention of some rich boy.
Elena also knew her father only tolerated such trips because he could “network” with other mafia families and end up drinking beer some other mafia men brought along for cookouts. He hardly ever looked at his son or wife. He never looked at Elena.

Elena knew it was all just another attempt by her greedy parents to end up on top. But swimming with her half- brother, going out further and further into the sea… It was the closest thing Elena got to freedom until she entered college.
Elena smiled bitterly at the memory. “My step–mother was actually from California originally, so she was a pretty good swimmer. Honestly, I’m probably the worst swimmer in my family.”
Massimo looked at Elena as if he was trying to memorize and place every stroke she made–every ripple she created in the pool.
