They taught me, but then my grandfather took over,Massimo continued. And swimming stopped being a restful activity and became one of the many skills I needed to master. It wouldn’t do if The Don of All Dons was invited on a cruise ship and died to something as preventable as being thrown overboard and drowning.

Massimo might be rumored to be cold and impassive, completely unfeeling as stone, but Elena could recognize the hurt and frustration buried under the don’s practiced monotone delivery. But just like the meeting earlier today, Elena wasn’t sure how to make things better.

Massimo switched from floating to just standing in the pool. Elena stopped swimming, too.

I don’t swim a lot these days,Massimo confessed. Only when I need to clear my head.

Maybe you should try to get back into it,Elena suggested. Everybody needs hobbies, and you already have this massive pool anywaysmight as well use it.

Elena gestured at the grand pool. I mean seriously, this must be the size of a football field.

Massimo smirked. More like the size of two football fields.

Elena rolled her eyes. Some people have too much money, she lamented.

Massimo actually laughedshort and sweetat that. Elena felt her chest lighten at the sound.

Eventually, the two got out of the pool. Elena wondered if she should offer to go swimming with Massimo again sometimemaybe that would help him get over his resentment at what once was a peaceful, fun activity.

Elena turned to tell him this, but slipped on the wet floor tiles. Before she could fall, Massimo caught her.

Thanks,Elena said. She laughed awkwardly, trying to feel less embarrassed. Forgot I must’ve tracked water here earlier-

Are you alright?Massimo asked suddenly.

Elena felt fine but she followed Massimo’s line of sightand discovered several of the ties for her swimsuit had come undone! Massimo must’ve pulled on them too tightly when he caught her.

Elena felt her face heat up. The stupid swimsuit was only covering up her lower half nowand barely doing that. But if she pulled away from Massimo, she’d likely only expose herself further.

Elena?Massimo called when she failed to answer him. Are your bullet wounds alright?

Only then did Elena notice where Massimo was looking. His eyes were glued to the faint scare on her shoulder and the more noticeable one on her stomach.

Oh, those? They’re fine,Elena said quickly.

Massimo looked almostconcerned. It was a rare expression for him, but Elena could still recognize iteven if it surprised her greatly.

You’re still applying the cream the doctors gave you, right?Massimo asked. Should you even be swimming in the first place? The wound on your stomach can’t get infected.

Elena’s head was spinning. Yes, I’ve been listening to their instructions and it’s fine. Really.

You’re sure?he pressed.

Yes, I promise,Elena replied. The doctors said the scars won’t even be noticeable in a few months.

Massimo let Elena go. Within seconds, he returned by her side with an extra towel for her. He set it gently down on her shoulders.

Good,Massimo said. You shouldn’t get something so ugly scarring you because of me.

Back in her room, Elena couldn’t stop thinking over Massimo’s words at the pool. She had retreated as quickly as she could and ran to her room. But now, hours later, her head was still spinning.

Massimo’s voice had dropped so low, so protective as he talked about her scars. And the way he said he hoped she wouldn’t get permanent scars because of himIt sounded more than just a boss expressing guilt to his employee.

Did Massimo still have feelings for her? Did he ever have feelings for her? Elena remembered how close they had gotten when she dressed his wounds late at night or how Massimo had smiled so brightly when she tried on the blue shirt had picked out.
