Chapter 159
Elena waited at Caffe Bella. She drummed her fingers on the table. It was thirty minutes until seven pm.
Thirty minutes until she finally met her husband. Thirty minutes until she learned who he really was. Thirty minutes until she could judge for herself what kind of man he was—and if that man was someone Elena could stay married to.
Elena felt nervous. She needed a way to calm down and fast.
Elena quickly dialed her best friend’s number.
“El?” Aria answered. “What’s up? You okay?”
“I’m fine,” Elena replied. “Well, mostly. I need to calm down before my dinner date.”
“Say no more!” Aria confidently declared. Elena could imagine her friend placing her hands on both hips as she spoke it was Aria’s way of showing off her seriousness. “I’ll distract you until loverboy shows up.”
Elena listened to Aria blab on and on about her new apartment, her cousin’s latest annoying habit, and even her own boyfriends and one–night stands. While she certainly felt calmer, Elena couldn’t help but watch the clock on the cafe’s wall–and notice that her date still wasn’t there yet.
“Geez, El,” Aria moaned dramatically, as if reading Elena’s mind. “How early did you show up to this date?”
“Pretty early,” Elena confessed. “But he actually was supposed to show up about twenty minutes ago.
“Twenty minutes!” Aria yelled, outraged. “And he didn’t text you he was late?”
Elena quickly double–checked her messages. “Nothing,” she reported.
“That’s total bullshit,” Aria huffed. “What asshole is trying to stand you up? Give me a name and he’s over, okay?”
“Well, actually, I don’t know his name,” Elena said guiltily.
The phone line suddenly went silent.
“El,” Aria said slowly, “don’t tell me you’re giving mystery husband another chance?”
“It’s complicated-‘

“Oh my god, El!” Aria yelled. “That bastard doesn’t deserve another minute of your time. Not after the shit he put you through.”
“He did apologize,” Elena said.
“He ghosted you for months, babe,” Aria replied, completely unimpressed. “He’s not worthy to be the dirt under your shoes, y’know? A guy who does that ones is going to do it again and again–trust me, he’s a scumbag, through and through.”
Elena wanted to protest. She wanted to tell Aria she had the wrong impression of her mystery husband. She wanted to assure her friend that he really was the type of guy she wanted to marry.

But Elena couldn’t argue with Aria. Because for all her swearing and outrage, Aria was saying the same things Elena had thought in her moments of self–doubt. And if Aria was speaking out so passionately about it, maybe Elena really was being too kind and forgiving.
“You could have any guy in New York completely over you,” Aria said angrily. “You’re a catch, El! Why are you letting this nobody tear you down?”
“I…”
“No, for real, El–I know this dude’s type and you don’t want him,” Aria continued. “I bet the only jokes he tells are mean or sarcastic ones.”
Elena thought back to her more recent messages form him. “Yeah,” she confessed. “He can be a little negative sometimes.”
“That’s what I mean!” Aria sighed. “If you can see those faults already–when he’s trying to be presentable and make a good impression—”
Elena’s heart stopped. She saw a man in a suit start walking to her table.
“Aria, I need to go. He’s here.” As her friend protested, Elena hung up the call. She sat frozen to her seat.
