Chapter 16
Massimo grabbed Elena’s sleeping form and laid her comfortably on the guest bed. She had dealt with enough today. No point adding to her problems with an awkward sleeping position.
Now that he was certain Elena would pull through, Massimo could admit that his doctor had once again managed to impress him. Elena kept doing that. From the moment she’d entered his office and insisted she was the best candidate for the job, Elena hadn’t stopped trying to prove herself.
It was an admirable quality to have. Even if Elena didn’t seem conscious of that quality.
Like how she didn’t hesitate to throw herself in the line of fire and take a bullet in her boss’s stead. While Massimo had many men who would do the same, they were trained for that eventuality. They hadn’t started as pure loyal dogs to the Ferraros.
For all their bluster and bragging, few mafia men could lay their lives down for their dons. Sure, they’d do most anything in their power to protect their bosses, but knowingly swap places and die for them?
It was a lot harder to do than get snuck up on in a shootout. It required a certain type of gumption and character.
Both of which Elena had, apparently.
If this was how Elena wanted to prove her loyalty, Massimo resolved to take it at face value. At least until he had solid proof that told him otherwise.
She really was an interesting person. But then again, he knew that from her opening interview back at the hospital. His assessment had just been reconfirmed today.
“I share nothing with my family aside from my name,” Elena had assured him back. “I have no contact with them, so you can be sure where my loyalties lie.”
Now Massimo could see what her words really meant: Elena had nothing, so she’d risk it all for the chance at having something.
“Congrats on passing the probation trial period, Dr. Elena Vitale,” Massimo muttered to his unconscious doctor.
Just then Luca knocked on the guest bedroom door. “I brought the rest of the doctor’s belongings,” he declared.
Massimo’s second–in–command placed Elena’s original evening outfit and her necklace onto the bedside table. Two phones–one must be for work while the other was personal, Massimo guessed—were placed on top of the folded clothing. Finally, Luca left Elena’s medical go–bag resting against the bedside table on the ground.
Luca stood silently next to Massimo. Waiting.
The don knew what he had to do. Giuseppe Conti might be dead, but Luca had the sense to make sure Conti’s mole was alive. The next steps were obvious.
As the Don of All Dons, Massimo had to settle a few scores.
Elena woke groggily. The anesthesia she had been given must have been stronger than she expected. Trying to think back on the night of the dinner party only gave her a fuzzy outline of what had happened.
Elena tried to move and instantly regretted it. Massimo had patched up her shoulder–even bandaged up the injury after giving her stitches–but the pain was still fresh and searing.
How had her boss walked on his leg after being shot? That jury had to have been worse. Elena had fished out nearly a whole bullet’s worth of shrapnel back then.
Slowly, Elena took in her surroundings. She spied her phones and picked up the personal one. She should probably text her roommate that she was okay and wouldn’t be back home for a bit.

But Elena already had a new text message. Not from her roommate, but her husband.
“We still need to meet up at some point. We’ll let that first meeting decide whether or not we should divorce. When are you free?”
Elena swore. She hadn’t meant to neglect her mysterious husband, but working for the mafia, even as a doctor, had proven to be far more busy and dangerous than she had expected.
She knew she should meet up with him soon and get out of his accidental limbo, but with her unpredictable schedule, she hadn’t wanted to make promises she couldn’t keep.
And now Elena had gotten shot. That would push back her timeline considerably. She didn’t want to meet her husband while she was trying not to scream in pain from her shoulder wound.
Plus, it definitely would give away how dangerous Elena’s life was. Elena was determined to keep her two lives separate. Her husband, a simple mechanic, didn’t need to know the dark details of her work.
“Of course!” she texted back. “I didn’t mean to leave you on read. I’m actually on a business trip out of state right now, so things have been really busy haha”
“I get back this Monday. Why don’t we meet up then?” Elena suggested.
Elena didn’t feel great about lying, but she knew she didn’t have an alternative. And while a little under a week wouldn’t magically cure the wound in her shoulder, she should be able to hide the injury without aggravating it.
Three little dots let Elena know her husband was forming a reply. But suddenly, the dots went away.
Elena’s stomach dropped. Was he angry at her, or just busy at work? She didn’t know the man well enough to be able to tell.
Despite entering into this marriage under less than ideal circumstances, Elena never wanted to use this man as a simple shield. No, she respected Mr. Fabio and his kindness too much to do something like that. Even if Mr. Fabio’s grandson ended up being incompatible with her romantically, Elena still wanted to get to know him.
It’s not like she wanted a fairy–tale romance. She’d settle for a friend. So long as they didn’t become enemies or stay total strangers, Elena would be happy with whatever relationship they settled on.
“Sorry again for the chaos. I can promise you I’m not treating this relationship lightly. I would love to get to know you, if you’re still willing to give this a shot.”
Elena frowned at the accidental bullet imagery but still sent her message anyway. She wanted this to work out.
She stared at her phone for a long span of minutes. It’s not like the pain in her shoulder would allow her to get up and get moving just yet. Between that and her anxiety, her eyes stayed glued to the screen.
Her phone buzzed as a new message appeared.
“Next Monday is acceptable.”
Another buzz, and then another text from her husband showed up on screen.
“I’m also busy at work, so we can figure out an exact time and location later.”
