Chapter 162

Elena returned back to the Ferraro estate in a good mood. She and her coworkers had managed to make good progress on the hospital’s renovation–Elena was hopeful that she’d be done with her part of the project within the week. The new wing would take at least a month to build–even with Massimo paying experts to get the job done quickly and safely—but Elena wouldn’t need to be involved at that point.
Elena was certain this idea would help Massimo’s reputation, both within and outside of the mafia. Everyone loves someone who gives back to the community.
And, even better, Elena was actually having fun during this assignment. She had almost not wanted to go home, but the doctor knew the importance of taking a break and resting. So once she was back at the estate, she headed to her room to do just that.
Elena’s room was completely different from how she left it. If she thought it was opulent and fancy before, this was outrageously overdone.
There was a chandelier made of glass crystals hanging from her ceiling. The walls had been repainted to include rich portraits and detailed scenes of nature done in a classical style. Her wooden dresser had been replaced- and the walls redone–to fit in a giant walk–in closet.
Instead of a vanity set, she had a banquet table filled with jewelry and makeup Elena had never seen before. There were also new appliances–a hair dryer and curler that looked straight out of a high–end salon, an espresso machine in the far corner, and a giant grandfather clock that was probably a restored antique of some kind.
“How did this happen?” Elena wondered aloud.
“Do you like it?” Massimo asked.
Elena spun around. Massimo had been watching Elena–who knows for how long–as she stood, frozen in place.
“Massimo,” Elena said, trying to keep her cool, “what’s all this?”
“A surprise,” Massimo replied vaguely. “Do you like it?”
“I guess?” Elena said hesitantly, glancing back into her room.
“You guess?” Massimo echoed. He frowned. “You only guess that you like it?”
Elena took a deep breath. “I appreciate the gesture, but even you must understand that this is… a lot.”
Elena walked back into her room. Massimo followed behind.
“I don’t understand what you mean,” he said. “They’re all nice things.”
“Yes, they are,” Elena easily admitted. “The paintings on the wall are especially lovely–they look like they belong in a museum.”
Elena gestured to the espresso machine. “But I don’t need all of this stuff.”
Massimo’s frown deepened. He was at least listening though.
“Besides, where’s all my stuff?” Elena asked.

“Some of it is in the new furniture and spaces,” Massimo explained. “But all the old things were thrown out and replaced.”
Elena bit back a sigh. She didn’t want to be rude, but Massimo’s inability to understand her feelings was getting really annoying.
“What’s wrong?” Massimo asked. “Isn’t this a nice gesture?”
Elena apparently hadn’t been hiding her displeasure as well as she thought if even someone like Massimo could pick up on it.
“Massimo, you need to respect my boundaries,” Elena said firmly, “I don’t go into your bedroom or office and move things around or throw them away.”
“I only threw away a few things,” Massimo defended. “Anyone would have gotten rid of them. A few broken clothes and a torn–up stuffed toy were replaced by new things that are more useful and won’t break as easily- anyone would like that.”
“That’s not the point,” Elena replied. Then Massimo’s caught up with her, and Elena’s blood ran cold. “Wait, did you throw away an old teddy bear?”
Massimo nodded. “Its fur had faded and its eyes were nearly falling out, not to mention how messed up its legs and arms were. That’s why I got you a new one that’s on your bed-

“Where did you put it? Did it actually get collected by the trash company yet?”
