Without another word, he turned around and walked out of the watate.

Elena sighed in relief and clutched the small beat to her chest.
Massimo stood awkwardly behind her.
After a long moment, Elena spoke up. “My mother gave it to me on my birthday the last birthday she was around for. It’s one of the few keepsakes I have left of her.”
It was silent again. Then, after a minute or two, Elena thought she heard a soft. “Sorry” from Massim she turned around though, he was already gone.
The two didn’t meet for dinner that night. But Elena had trouble sleeping so she went downstairs to get of water. Meanwhile, Massimo was enjoying a late dinner.
Elena thought about turning around and heading back to her room, but she decided against it. She didn’t want to behave so childishly. She entered the dining room.
“Good evening,” she said neutrally.
Massimo nodded in return. “I’ll have your room put back the way it was while you’re at the hospital tomorrow save the paintings, if you still want them.”
Elena smiled. “That would be great.”
They fell into familiar silence. Elena was overjoyed that Massimo had finally understood his mistake.
“Do you have any keepsakes from your parents?” Elena asked.
Massimo shook his head. “The Don of All Dons should never be sentimental. All the things from my childhood clothes, toys, other gifts–were donated or disposed of by my grandfather when I outgrew them.”
“That’s awful,” Elena replied. “To not have one trace left of your parents…”
Massimo simply shrugged. “I suppose the Ferraro family sigil ring was the closest thing I had, as it had been passed down for generations. But that needed to be replaced after Tyler stole it and used it for mischief.”
“I’m sorry I brought it up,” Elena said.
“Don’t be,” Massimo replied. “We have different values—that’s not a big deal.”
Elena sat down next to Massimo as he finished his meal. It was like they were making up for missing dinner together. Outside, the rain grew into a storm.
“Do you think your grandfather kept anything?” Elena asked after a while.
“Maybe,” Massimo replied thoughtfully. “He can be a hypocrite at times.”

“You should ask him about them!”
Massimo frowned. “We may have a slightly better relationship now, but I’m not sure he’d agree. And I make it a point to never ask questions I don’t know the answer to.”
