Chapter 166
And if Massimo had somehow finished those meetings already…. Well, Elena wasn’t in a hurry to see him. He had been acting so weird lately!
So Elena offered to work the rest of the day at the hospital. She felt a little bad that she was only doing this to avoid her boss, but her coworkers cheered the second they heard her offer. Elena smiled as she was led to the intake room and given familiar work.
The day passed by uneventfully as Elena helped guide patients to different parts of the hospital. But as Elena was coming back from her latest task, she spotted a familiar face in one of the hospital beds.
It was her father!
Elena immediately averted her eyes. He hadn’t spotted her, thank goodness. Elena hurried away, not willing to risk a possible confrontation with her father.
Instead, she chatted with one of the nurses she saw leave the room.
“What’s wrong with the patient in 402?” Elena asked.
“Mr. Vitale?” the male nurse asked. “He’s fine, just sprained his ankle. He’ll be given a cast since it’s borderline and he’s making a fuss, but it should heal up soon–provided he stays off it.”
Nothing major then. Elena released a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding.
“Thank you,” Elena said as calmly as she could.
She excused herself and headed off to the surgery hall—they always needed an extra hand there at this time of day. And if it happened to be on the complete opposite side of the hospital as her father’s room was, that was just another benefit for Elena.
“That’s fifteen down,” Luca announced as he and Massimo re–entered the limo. “We’re making good time. today.”
Massimo hummed in agreement. Opening with small talk about the lower don’s lives really made the business transactions feel more casual, which meant that Massimo could leave right after without seeming rude. All he had to do was make a comment about “catching up later” and the other dons were smiling instead of scowling as Massimo left.
Massimo looked out the window as the limo drove down the street. They were making good time–perhaps Massimo could afford to make a quick stop.
“Luca,” Massimo called, “Make a right up here at the stoplight.”
“Are we stopping at Gavino’s, sir?”
“Yes.”
Luca dutifully obeyed. After a moment, he parked the car at a small pizzeria.
Massimo hurried inside. The pizzeria was small and empty–which was to be expected. It was a front for mafia work, after all.

Massimo entered the code for one of the doors marked ‘Employees Only.‘ He stepped inside the back office.
Gavino was already there, sitting at a cheap desk. “Don Massimo, what a surprise!” he cried. “What brings you here today?”
“I got tired of hearing everyone claim to be my loyal vassals, so I decided to visit some of my real loyal subordinates,” Massimo explained. Massimo paused for a moment. “How is your financee?”
Gavino’s face lit up. “She’s well!” he exclaimed, pulling a series of pictures up on his phone. “She got back from visiting her mother–the country air did her some real good, I tell you!”
“Though,” Gavino continued, “I suspect you didn’t come here to talk about her, no?”
Massimo swiped through Gavino’s phone briefly before handing it back. “If you have progress on your report, I’d like to see that,” Massimo admitted.
Gavino took out a stack of paper. The handwriting wasn’t great, but Massimo was used to reading Gavino’s notes. His sloppy handwriting was better than any code–Massimo could be sure only he and Gavino could decipher these notes.
“Here’s what I have on the mafia families in New York and the next states over,” Gavino said. “These families right here are the ones with the most sway.”
Massimo frowned. The families Gavino had pointed to were all invited to the upcoming dinner. Which meant Massimo would need to attend it–and with his “wife,” too.
Elena walked down the hallway, exhausted by the operation she had helped perform. It had gone well, but Elena was drained.
“Elena, is that you?”
Elena turned to face the voice. It wasn’t her father who had called out to her, but her step–mother.
