#Chapter95: Unexpected Reunions

Massimo did not have time to wallow in his failures. He was the Mafia King, the Don of All Dons, and that demanded the very best from him. It demanded he give his attention to more important matters and set aside his own emotions and troubles.

Like always.

Massimo got dressed, careful to pick out an expensive suit that wasn’t too flashy. He needed to demand respect from the various families he’d be visiting today, but he shouldn’t be begging for itif the other families thought he was showing off, they would definitely act out in response.

Massimo enjoyed a simple breakfast of plain coffee and a croissant as he looked over his itinerary for the day. He’d need to meet with twentyfive families within twelve hourswhich meant careful timetracking. But Massimo couldn’t let these appointments feel rushed.

Just then, Massimo recalled how Elena had argued with and coached him during their trip to Florida. She had stressed the importance of forging genuine connections by finding shared interests and generally seeming excited by life events.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to do a little more research on these families before he left. If Massimo mentioned recent life events of the mafia head’s liveschildren going off to college, marriages, new babies, and the like it would likely help each meeting feel more personalized and less like a business transaction. It would have the added benefit of reminding each family that the Don of All Dons was always watching

Just then, Elena entered the dining room.

Good morning,Massimo greeted.

Morning,Elena said hurriedly. I’ll be heading out to the hospital now.

Already?Massimo glanced at his watchthey had left the estate an hour later yesterday, so Elena couldn’t be running late already, could she? You haven’t had breakfast yet.

It’s fine, I’ll grab something from the cafeteria,Elena explained, leaving the room.

Massimo hurried after her. Give me a moment to fetch the car then.

One of my old colleagues is actually picking me up today,Elena explained. You have a long day of meetings today and he actually lives nearby so it seemed like the best solution.

Massimo paused as they entered the entryway. Elena was already heading for the door.

Elena?he called.

She stopped, her fingers resting on the door handle. Yes?

This isn’t about last night is it?Massimo asked. Because if so, I wanted to say I’m sorry-

And if it isn’t?Elena asked. Massimo just looked at her, confused so Elena continued, If it isn’t, are you still sorry?

Massimo stumbled with his words at that unexpected response. Elena looked down at her phone.

I have to go now,Elena said. Good luck at work.

Massimo replayed that conversation over and over in his mind. Even as Luca prepared the last details of their strategy, Massimo couldn’t stop thinking about it.

But Massimo needed to focus. He had to collect tithes from prominent mafia families all across New York. And if there was one truth across all mafia families, it was to never make a mistake with money.

Massimo would need to be careful to avoid upsetting or slighting other families. At the same time, he needed to be vigilant that no one was lying about their income and trying to screw over the Ferraros.

Not to mention all the lying and schmoozing and trying to win the Mafia King over. Massimo already could feel a headache forming at the thought of dealing with all of it.

Luca, of course, would do his best to assist him. After all their years together, Massimo’s assistant had never let him down. But as Massimo waited in the back seat of his limo, all he could think about was how much he wanted Elena here instead.

She’d understand how annoying this process was and talk about it. She’d make a joke or tell a story to distract Massimo. She’d make this whole trip feel like less of a chore.

Massimo sighed. He really needed to patch up their relationshipand fast.

Meanwhile, at St. Camillus Hospital, Elena made quick work of the remaining overseeing tasks. The conversation with the head of the hospital had actually gone quite well. He had agreed to all of Elena’s renovation plan and signed off on everything!

Technically, Elena knew she should return to the Ferraro estate, but she knew from yesterday that the hospital was still shortstaffed. And since Luca and Massimo would be driving around New York all day for various meetings, it wasn’t like Elena had any pressing tasks back at the estate.
