Chapter 168
Elena stayed on her bed for a while, stewing in her emotions. She didn’t appreciate how Massimo not only acted completely opposite to what Elena had grown to expect from him but also started picking at old wounds! Though Elena knew she would have to smooth over things with her boss eventually, she wasn’t in a hurry.
Why were her parents at St. Camillus Hospital–the hospital that was backed by the Ferraro family–when they had allied themselves with Don Tyler Morello? Elena doubted they had switched sides, so what were they up to?
Were they spying on her? Trying to convince her to come back and marry Tyler? Or had Tyler left them to fend for themselves after he was so thoroughly beaten by Massimo?
Elena sighed. All she was doing was getting more and more frustrated. Suddenly, her personal phone buzzed.
Her husband had messaged her. “How was your day?” he asked.
“You stopped texting suddenly,” he continued. “Is everything okay?”
“My parents–who I don’t have the best relationship with–showed up at the hospital,” Elena replied. “I tried to avoid them, but my boss butted in, so my step–mother, him, and I all had a meal together. It was terrible.”
“That’s not great,” her husband replied.
“I know! And then I told off my boss afterwards but he kept being like ‘oh you’re so nice, I thought you got along with everyone!“”
Her husband took a minute to respond. “Is that really what he said?”
“No, but I’m getting across the vibe of what he said,” Elena explained. “Then I reminded him to behave more professionally, but I might’ve done it too harshly.”
Three dots flashed on screen for a long moment. “Are you still angry with him?”
“Not really,” Elena replied. “I just didn’t want to get into the details of how messed up my step–mother can be.”
“Do you want to talk about it with me, or should I also leave the topic alone?” her husband asked.
Elena thought for a moment. It wasn’t exactly a pleasant subject, but her husband probably deserved to know this much about her family. Besides, talking about it and getting the story off her chest would likely put her in a better mood.
“We can talk about it,” Elena replied. “The problem is that my step–mother is very good at being two–faced. She’s spent a lifetime faking sincerity and politeness–even someone as practiced as my boss couldn’t tell she was lying.”
“That does present a problem,” her husband stated.
“It is,” Elena confirmed. “She uses her skills to scam people that my father points out. And then, after causing so much suffering to everyone, she’s always the first to say how we need to ‘keep the peace‘ whenever I try to call out my dad’s behavior!”
“It’s all a smoke screen so that she can do nothing,” Elena continued. “My step–mother feeds into my father’s worst tendencies, and he encourages her worst behavior. They make everyone around them into terrible people

–they’re like two halves of the devil.”
Elena could feel herself getting more angry as she finished typing. She paused and took a few more deep breaths.
“Thank you for sharing this with me,” her husband replied. “I realize this must have been difficult to speak about, so thank you for doing so.”
