Chapter 169

“Hold on,” Elena said. “That’s too much. I can’t accept that if you don’t have work for me here, I can do some work at the hospital as an average doctor.”
Massimo closed his eyes. He predicted Elena might feel too guilty about taking a full day off.
“If you’re so set on working today, I suppose there is a job you can do…”
Elena finished looking at one of the lower mafla men in Massimo’s service. “You should be fine–just keep weight off that arm for the next week,” Elena said before getting up.
As she headed to Massimo’s car, Elena sighed. She had been worried when Massimo told her to take the day off. Elena knew he had only offered such a thing because he was feeling guilty about their argument yesterday.
And knowing that only made Elena feel guilty that she had been so harsh with him.
Elena shook her head. She couldn’t focus on that when there were patients to attend to! And Massimo had given her a respectable sized list of subordinates to check in on–and Elena was determined to get through them all today!
“All set?” Massimo asked. When Elena nodded, he started the car. “Alright, let’s head over to Gavino’s.”
Gavino’s place turned out to be a small pizzeria. There were actually several of Massimo’s subordinates there, which let Elena efficiently work. She was able to check their health in record time.
As Elena worked, she couldn’t help but smile. This was a nice reminder of why, despite everything, Elena worked with Massimo. The don might talk coldly, but he’s kind to subordinates and rewards their loyalty handsomely–what other don sends their personal doctor to do routine physical check–ups for his subordinates?
Most of Massimo’s subordinates were perfectly healthy, but one stood out: Gavino.
Elena glanced over his health record as Massimo chatted with the other subordinates. Gavino had asthma as well as some kidney problems. On top of that, he had recently lost his left arm.
“You don’t have to look so sad, miss,” Gavino said. “I’m getting used to working with just my right hand now. It’s bothersome but manageable, I promise.”
Elena did her best to smile. “You tell me if that changes.”
“Yes, miss,” Gavino replied. “Have you been working with Don Massimo long? I haven’t seen you around before.

“I’m the new Ferraro family doctor,” Elena explained. “I started here a few months ago.”
Gavino nodded along. “Our paths might cross sometimes then. I’ve started doing more office work than mafia work–ever since I lost my arm, I mean.”
“How did that happen?” Elena asked. “I mean, your file doesn’t give specifics and it would be good to know so that I can more accurately treat you. But if you’re uncomfortable talking about it, I’m sure there’s something-”
“It’s alright, I don’t mind,” Gavino interrupted. Elena was getting the sense he was a very easy–going type of

man. “I’ll give you the short versions, and you can tell me if you need more details”
“I was actually undercover at the police department for the Ferraro family,” Gaving explained. “But someone turned traitor. He got taken care of by the don personally, but before that, that rat caused a bit of trouble with me -the bastard sold me out.”
“The police don’t take kindly to moles,” Gavino continued. “My arm was turned to swiss cheese by bullets and some sharp knives–the old doctor couldn’t save it.”
Elena took notes as Gavino spoke. She was struck by how unusual Gavino’s story was–normally, when a mafla man got injured that badly on the job, he would be dropped and forgotten. Elena knew her own father or Tyler would act that cruelly, perhaps even disposing of their own agent–and she bet many more mafia heads would act the same.
But not Massimo. He found Gavino a less demanding job.
A little while later in the car, Massimo spoke up. “That’s enough work for today. Since we’re near the shops, how about we pick up a few things for the estate?”
Elena knew Massimo didn’t always make the right calls but his heart is generally in the right place. This too was a clumsy attempt to grant her some joy.
“That sounds great,” Elena agreed.
