Chapter 171
selena couldn’t understand why Massimo kept settling for whatever was the most expensive option at each store. It was completely baffling.
Massimo wanted to sigh. Of course Elena wouldn’t let him buy her any gifts. Now Massimo had a bunch of garbage he didn’t even want to own!
He was about to call the whole plan off when he noticed Elena frowning as she went through her work bag
“What’s wrong?” he asked.
“Oh,” Elena replied, “it’s nothing really.”
Elena pulled out her wallet from her bag. It was a beat–up old thing, but Elena’s fingers stayed by a tear that was forming right down the wallet’s middle.
“It’ll be fine–I can fix it with some duct tape,” Elena said hurriedly. “But I am worried if the plastic covering for the ID slot will be okay. It’s where I keep an old picture of my mom.”
“Show me.”
Elena obediently opened the wallet. In the ID slot was a faded and torn picture of a woman who resembled Elena –if she had a longer nose and lighter hair and was about a decade older. She was holding a tiny newborn baby who was almost obscured by the tight blanket the baby was swaddled in.
Wordlessly, Massimo switched directions. He headed straight to a men’s accessory store. Elena hurried behind
him.
As soon as Elena saw the rows upon rows of wallets, she frowned. “Massimo, really it’s fine-”
A worker rudely interrupted them. “Can I help you two find anything? We just had some high–end wallets imported from Spain-”
“Wallets by Goyard only,” Massimo stated firmly.
“Are you sure you wouldn’t prefer Bellroy or Mulberry?” The salesman replied. “We have—”
“Do you have Goyard or not?” Massimo said, staring at the worker coldly.
“Yes, right this way, sir!”
Massimo looked through the offered wallets. Luckily, there was something vaguely similar to the wallet Elena already owned–and with more clear slots for IDs or pictures. It was perfect.
“This one,” Massimo said, passing it to the worker. “And before you ask, yes, that will be all today.”
“Then let’s move on to the registers,” the salesman replied, never losing his smile.
After finishing their shopping trip, Massimo took Elena to a nice restaurant for an early dinner. It looked familiar -if Elena recalled correctly, this was the restaurant they stopped by after getting some presents for Massimo’s wife. Well, ex–wife now.
But Elena couldn’t focus on that. She turned the new wallet over in her hands. It was way out of her price range

and not anything she would ever buy for herself, but it was very practical.
It was actually the most practical wallet in that store that Elena saw. And it wasn’t even the most expensive Goyard wallet for sale. It was just perfect for her needs plenty of protective pockets, a lifetime warranty of guaranteed durability, and a plain, slim exterior.
As food was served, Elena felt bad about getting distracted over such a small gift. But then she noticed Massimo also seemed to be lost in his own thoughts.
“Are you alright?” Elena asked.
