Chapter 170
Massimo knew this time he was going to cheer up Elena–and hopefully deepen their relationship at the same time. After all, this time, Massimo was tailoring his approach entirely to Elena.
The day Massimo began to first realize his affection for Elena was when they went shopping for suitable presents for Aria. And, if the frequency Elena wore her gifted blue blouse was any indication, Elena also had enjoyed that trip. Back then, Massimo had accidentally showered Elena with gifts and consequently grown
closer to Elena.
So if Massimo did such things on purpose, Elena was sure to be pleased!
That was Massimo’s guiding plan as he entered the shopping district once more with Elena. Of course, Elena hadn’t been too receptive to gifts lately–which meant Massimo just needed to be more clever with how he gave them away. If Massimo could insist he was just buying some household essentials, Elena would have no grounds to refuse his generosity.
Massimo smiled to himself as they entered a high end mall. His strategy was flawless!
“So what do we need to pick up?” Elena asked as they entered the mall.
“Just some essentials,” Massimo stated confidently. “Let’s start with the toiletries–I could use some more shampoo.”
Elena nodded and followed her boss into a luxury soap store. All their hair and skin products were entirely hand made. Elena especially appreciated some of the more complex carvings they had done for a few different bars of
soap.
Massimo noticed her staring and picked up one of the soaps. “We should get this while we’re here–it’ll save us a trip later.”
Elena frowned. “No it won’t. You only use liquid soap.”
Massimo seemed caught off guard by her refusal. “I was… thinking of trying bar soap again!” he declared after a long moment.
“You should do more research before you switch,” Elena stated. “Besides, we were just here to get some shampoo. So let’s stay on task.”
Massimo paused. After what felt like an eternity, he set the bar of soap back down and slowly made his way to the store’s hair product aisle.
Elena found herself needing to remind Massimo’s of his list of essentials again and again. Luckily, she had learned from her previous shopping trips with Massimo, so she was ready to do so. After all, she knew Massimo had a tendency to go overboard whenever he was uncertain about what to buy.
“Elena, what do you think of this letter writing set?”
“It’s very pretty, but we’re just here to get ink for your printer. Let’s go find that.”
“Elena, they’re having a sale on jewelry at the next store over-”
“And I’ll save even more money by not getting anything. Now, what did you want from this store again? New

shoelaces, right?”
“Elena, how about we pick up this new pillow for your room?”
“For the last time, Massimo, just because you can afford to buy a bunch of stuff doesn’t mean you should pick up trendy things for no reason! We’re here to get some coasters, so let’s focus on that.”
Elena was quite pleased by how well she kept redirecting Massimo back to his initial task whenever he got distracted. They hadn’t bought a single unnecessary thing the whole trip!
Though there was one new problem Elena had noticed. After being reminded of his shopping list several times, Massimo stopped getting distracted. However, he started buying the most expensive version of whatever was on
the list.
Back when Elena first met Massimo, she would’ve assumed that was just how he shopped. But, after living at the Ferraro estate for a while, Elena started to notice what items Massimo surrounded himself with.
Sure, his ink refills for his printer were expensive, but he didn’t usually buy the ones with fancy computer chips installed for bluetooth printing. And while the shoes he wore were always by an Italian designer, he usually rotated clothes from three top designers–he would never go into a store and purchase the most expensive pair made by an up–and–coming designer who’d barely been around for a season. On the whole, Massimo had discerning taste in his purchases for himself.
