Chapter 173
To her surprise, Massimo actually nodded. “And that is a good and just decision,” he agreed. “I would never ask you to break any of your deals.”
Elena wanted to sigh in relief but she settled for a small smile. “Then the matter is settled,” Elena said. “I cannot pretend to be your wife.”
“Elena, you’re not trying to actually marry me, are you?” Massimo asked.
“No!” she immediately responded.
“Then you wouldn’t be breaking your marriage agreement,” Massimo argued. “You wouldn’t actually be doing any of the wifely duties you’ve already promised your husband. Tell me, do you think actors divorce their spouses every time they perform a new role that requires them to pretend they’re in love with someone else?”
Elena frowned. “Still, I can’t imagine my husband would be happy to hear his wife is pretending to be in love with someone else,” Elena stated.
“Ask him.”
“Excuse me?”
Massimo didn’t even blink. “If this is your only protest to the idea, then ask him. Considering how comfortable he is with digital interactions, he might not even mind how you behave in reality,” he said simply.
but Elena found that hard to believe. Sure, she hadn’t rescheduled a new meeting time with her husband yet, that was because they were both busy, hard working adults. And considering how harshly he had spoken to her when he thought she was her roommate, Elena was certain he would consider “pretending to be another man’s wife” as cheating.
Massimo’s voice called Elena from her thoughts. “I wouldn’t ask this of you lightly,” Massimo insisted. “So please, Elena, do this for me–pretend to be my wife.”
Elena hesitated.
“Fine,” she finally said, “but I’ll only do this if we agree on one condition. My husband needs to approve of this plan. Otherwise, I’m not doing it.”
Massimo smiled. “It’s a deal,” he said. “So let’s enjoy the rest of our meal for now.”
Elena was surprised how calm Massimo could be. He went back to his meal like the deal had already been approved. The confidence of a mafia don was truly something else.
Elena also went back to trying desserts without any fuss. After all, she knew what her husband would say—he’d completely disapprove. And while she felt bad that she wouldn’t be able to help Massimo through such a difficult situation, she knew this task was completely out of her hands.
That night, Elena sat in her bedroom and pulled out her personal phone. She thought for a moment on how to explain her boss’s offer without mentioning any mafia details.
“Hey, this is going to sound weird, but I want you to listen to the end before you say anything,” Elena texted. My boss is having a problem. Do you remember how I said the shareholders were concerned about his image as a

divorced man?”
“I recall, yes,” her husband immediately replied.

“Well, they think the best way to fix this is for him to pretend to still be married. His wife was never shown off, so the plan is to get someone to pretend to be his wife very publicly–she’ll attend a bunch of parties and meetings so that no one will know he’s divorced.”
“That could work,” her husband replied. “It’s a very reasonable, not at all weird idea.”
“Sure but that’s not the weird part,” Elena explained. “See, they can’t just hire any actress because of company secrets–the wife needs to know them since she’ll be attending business meetings but the information is very valuable so we need to be sure she won’t leak them or sell them to a competitor.”
“The weird part,” Elena continued, “is that my boss wants me to pretend to be his wife. I told him I would only do it if you gave your approval.”
To Elena’s surprise, her husband immediately responded. “That’s fine,” he replied. “I completely understand and give you permission to do so.”
