Chapter 174
For the second time that day, Elena was incredibly, thoroughly shocked. Why was her husband okay with her pretending to be married to someone else?
*“Are you sure?” Elena asked, “I really don’t need to do this.”
“I’m sure,” her husband replied. “And I’m okay with it.”
Was the same man who called her a whore when he thought she was seeing someone else? He had gotten so mean and nasty the moment he thought Elena might be more sexually liberal than conservative. Yet here he was, claiming that he was okay with this whole farce of pretending to be her boss‘ wife?
*“This is the same boss who I’ve started working with this year,” Elena texted back. “He’s already letting me rent part of his house while I look for a new apartment—don’t you think this might be crossing any lines?”
“You’re just pretending,” her husband replied. “And you two seem close already, so that would make you a better candidate for this role, yes? Really, it’s okay with me.”
“How?!” Elena insisted.
Elena couldn’t understand his logic! No one would be okay with their wife doing this! So why was her husband so calm?
For a brief moment, panic gripped her heart. What if her husband was only okay with this because he was thinking about getting divorced? Elena wanted to believe that wasn’t true, but that made more sense than her husband suddenly undergoing such a drastic change of opinions.
*“No husband would want his wife to do this,” Elena pressed, “so why are you okay with this? You wanted to divorce me the instant you thought I might have a boyfriend–you take this kind of thing very seriously. So why are you even entertaining this idea?”
“Because it’s you asking,” her husband instantly replied.
That made Elena’s heart stop and her mind go blank.
“You’re a very kind person,” he continued, “and I love your kindness. You want to help everyone, and you always try to take other people’s feelings into account in all your actions. So I understand you wouldn’t ask about this unless it was very important.”
Elena couldn’t believe her husband’s insightful comments. They hadn’t even met in person, yet he understood her so well.
Because Elena wouldn’t have asked her husband if she wasn’t worried about Massimo’s position as Mafia King. She knew if Massimo didn’t attend this upcoming mafia gathering with his wife, people would begin to doubt her existence. And all the work she and Massimo had done to strengthen their ties to different families and make allies would be for nothing–no one would have faith in the Don of All Dons.
Still, Elena was a little uneasy. *“Aren’t you scared I’ll end up cheating on you?” she texted.
“I trust you,” her husband replied. “And, if something does happen, we can talk about it later. You have my full trust and blessing to do this.”

The next morning, Elena met in Massimo’s office.
“My husband gave his permission,” she said. “So what exactly do I need to do?”
Massimo grinned and handed Elena a thick folder.
“You start tonight,” he said. “Do you remember that meeting those mafia families were talking about? It’s going, to be banquet tonight held at my estate-”
“Wait, wait,” Elena said. She held up her hand. “Before we get into the details of tonight’s banquet, we need to be clear on what exactly I’ll be doing as your wife.”
