Chapter 178
When Elena returned to Massimo’s side, she could instantly tell something was wrong. His frown has gotten deeper in her absence and his brow was furrowed. Something was wrong, and Masssimo was likely thinking up a plan to fix it.
Unfortunately, Elena couldn’t just ask what had happened–there were so many people here, and she didn’t want to risk anyone overhearing a potential problem. So Elena had to just take a guess at what had happened and work off that theory.
Massimo was still standing by Don Grasso and Don Abano. Had Massimo maybe misspoken to one of them? Offended them in some way?
“Hello again, gentlemen,” Elena greeted them. “I trust we’re having some fun in between talks of business, yes?

Elena laughed and the two dons joined in. Massimo didn’t even chuckle.
“We’ll leave you to enjoy your evening then,” Massimo said suddenly. Without so much as a goodbye, he grabbed Elena by the wrist and took off to the opposite side of the banquet hall.
“What are you doing?” Elena hissed.
“We haven’t talked to some of the smaller families yet,” Massimo said lamely. “Their egos are bigger than their appetites–they’ll kick up trouble if we don’t at least say hello.”
Elena bit back a sigh and she let Massimo lead them further into the crowd of party–goers.
Elena knew Massimo’s excuse of greeting guests felt off. Her instincts were confirmed when, not even five minutes later, Massimo was dragging her off to another corner of the banquet hall under an equally flimsy excuse. When he tried to pull the same trick again, Elena instead pulled Massimo off towards the open bar–it was the quietest spot she could find.
“Alright,” Elena whispered seriously, “what is going on?”
“Like I said before, we need to greet-”
“No we don’t,” Elena interrupted. “We’ve said hello to everyone important. And I know I’m not a big fan of the Abano family after what happened on the cruise ship, but even I can admit that we need them on our side. Tonight was about strengthening our ties to powerful families–which we can’t do if you’re dragging me in a new direction every other minute.”
Massimo sighed. He turned to the servant at the bar, who quickly passed the don a full whiskey glass. Massimo sipped on the beverage for a long moment.
“One of Tyler’s men is here,” Massimo confessed. “His best advisor, Consigliere Leo Morello.”
Elena frowned. Despite keeping a careful eye on her own family’s–and, by extension, the Morello family’s- dealings growing up, the name didn’t sound familiar.
“That’s not a good sign,” Elena said. “What is Consigliere Leo like? What do we have to watch out for?”
“You must have heard the rumors about the Morello family, what with your father working for them,” Massimo

“Pretend thaven’t,” Elena insisted. “The Morello family is constantly trading out people, Massimo.”
“Only in the lower circle,” Massimo corrected. “The ones at the top stay the same.”
“I wasn’t aware of that,” Elena replied.
“I’m not surprised. Tyler doesn’t trust these people, after all,” Massimo continued. “They earned their titles the same way Tyler did–by backstabbing anyone and being ruthless and clever.”
“Wait, then Consigliere Leo is here by himself?” Elena asked. “He wasn’t sent here by Tyler to spy on us?”
“That’s the most likely reason, yes,” Massimo confirmed.
Elena frowned. “But Tyler isn’t allowed in New York anymore,” she argued. “So he would have to trust someone else if he wanted to spy on you.”
“It’s less likely but not impossible,” Massimo replied. “Either way, a member of the Morellos knowing anything about us is bad.”
Elena nodded. “So what would you like to do-”
“Ah, here’s where the power couple is hiding!”
Elena and Massimo turned to face the man who had called out to them. It was none other than the man they had been discussing–Consigliere Leo.
Leo had slicked back short blonde hair and piercing blue eyes. His skin was so pale it was practically the color of marble. Elena wondered briefly if he suffered from albinism–his eyelashes and eyebrows did seem significantly lighter than his hair.
