Chapter 179
Unlike Tyler, Leo seemed to favor the color black. His entire three piece suit was devoid of any other color- everything from the pocket handkerchief to the buttons on his vest were black. Leo even had a small pair of black tinted glasses to complete the look.
Leo smiled at Elena, and it took all her effort to suppress the shiver that went down her spine. Luckily, his gaze swiftly switched to Massimo.
“Our dear Don of All Dons, I don’t believe we’ve had the pleasure of meeting face to face before,” Leo said humbly. To Elena’s great surprise, he got down on one knee and bowed his head. “I am Consigliere Leo Morello, at your service.”
Massimo’s eyes twitched in annoyance. “I’m aware of who you are, and if you were more aware of me, you’d know I’m not one for theatrics.”
Leo rose back to his feet in an instant, his smile never wavering. “Apologies then, my Mafia King. The Morellos care more for these old traditions–I meant no offense.”
Massimo merely grunted.
“And you,” Leo said, turning back to Elena, “must be the woman who captured our King’s heart.”
Leo grabbed Elena’s free hand and laid a kiss upon it. He held it firmly as he looked into her eyes. “You are radiant, though I haven’t heard your name yet this evening.”
Massimo pulled Elena’s hand out of Leo’s grasp. “Her name is Elena, though it should not be used by any but me, ” he growled.
“But of course!” Leo replied. “You two truly make a wonderful couple. It seems fitting, considering how lovely your estate is.”
Elena watched Massimo’s frown deepen. She knew her boss well enough to know his patience was running thin –if she didn’t want a scene to break out, she needed to act quickly.
“Speaking of lovely,” Elena interrupted, “the banquet meal is about to begin. And my husband and I must check that everything is ready.”
Leo’s smile widened. “Don’t let me keep you then.”
Elena returned the smile as she left with Massimo. Though nothing had happened, she had a strange sense of unease growing in the back of her mind.
It took no time to check on the meal. Massimo and Elena took their places at the head of the long banquet table. Massimo only needed to grab a wine glass and tap its side once for the entire hall to quiet down.
Massimo hated many things about mafia parties, but he always enjoyed how quickly he could get everyone’s attention. It was nice to have such a vivid reminder of the power he wielded.
“Thank you all for attending our banquet tonight,” Massimo said elegantly. “We’ve been through many trials these past months, but tonight, we celebrate. Try as the police or enemies might, we are unshakeable.”
A polite round of applause started up.

“And,” Massimo continued, “If we need to face such petty inconveniences to end up here…” Massimo looked at Elena as he spoke, “then such small trials are worth every moment.”
A few hushed members in the crowd let out soft “aw“s. By the pink that filled Elena’s cheeks, it was clear she noticed Massimo’s declaration of love.
