Chapter 190
“I came to you,” Massimo said smoothly. Though he didn’t wear armor, he did match Elena’s outfit by wearing a light blue suit covered in small sparkles–what Elena suspected were off–cuts of diamonds, probably, He certainly looked and talked like a prince out of a fairy tale.
It was… odd, but not unpleasant. Elena couldn’t look away from Massimo.
“I hope you don’t mind, but I need to steal away my wife,” Massimo told the tea party guests with a smile.
He turned to face Jill directly. “You have my sincere apologies for interrupting your party, but we have a standing date to get to. We can’t be late.”
Elena could tell the women were getting swayed by Massimo’s good looks and suave words.
“A date?” Amelia repeated. “Where are you two love birds headed?”
Massimo placed a finger to his lips. “It’s a surprise for Elena,” he replied.
Soon everyone was talking about Massimo’s devotion to his wife. If Elena had given an unsatisfying answer to how she had fallen in love with the Mafia King, no one would remember that now. Massimo had swiftly swept every other topic besides himself away.
Elena knew Massimo could be surprisingly socially aware, but not like this. His usual weapons of bluntness and a cold attitude hid how disarmingly charming he could be.
It only took a minute for Massimo to get Elena out of the tea party. But he didn’t ease up on his Prince Charming act until they were safely in his limo.
“Sorry about that,” he said immediately. “It was the fastest way to get you out of there.”
“And that was necessary because?” Elena replied. She might’ve appreciated his help at the end, but Elena couldn’t stand the idea that Massimo had gone back on their deal. “I thought you said I could attend this party- and I got some useful business information from it, too.”
“I’m sorry about that as well,” Massimo continued. “I would have let you stay, but I received news that requires a doctor.”
Elena’s anger instantly melted. In a moment, she fully slipped out of the role of Mafia Queen and into that of a talented doctor.
She checked that one of the emergency go–bags was still in the car–it was. Only then did she turn back to her
boss.
“What’s going on?” Elena asked.
Rather than respond himself, Massimo took out his phone and plugged it into the limo’s internal speakers.
“Gavino,” Massimo said, “tell Elena what you told me.”
Gavino’s voice came through crystal clear from the above speakers. Elena could tell he was more careful with his words–this wasn’t the first time he had to send sensitive, important information over the phone.
“Does she know about the mission, Don Massimo?” Gavino asked.

Massimo sighed. “I’ve been sending my subordinates in more organized groups ever since that skirmish at the border,” he explained. “I though Tyler was involved, so I was hoping to catch him in the act if he tried anything again.”
