Chapter 191
Massimo only shrugged. “They could’ve stepped on a fucking landmine for all we know right now.”
Elena had never seen Massimo so uncertain. It was clear he was rattled.
Not that Elena could blame him. These were Massimo’s subordinates–people he worked with and cared about. And they could be dying this very minute.
And worst of all, Massimo could do nothing. He had to sit and wait as a servant drove the car as fast as possible.
Elena didn’t know how to comfort Massimo. This was something no normal person ever had to deal with. And while Elena’s life was far from normal, this was one aspect of her life the mafia hadn’t tainted.
And she had never been more glad for that fact.
They arrived at the last known location of Massimo’s men faster than Elena thought possible–though it felt like forever with how quiet and solemn the drive was. But Elena didn’t see anything out the windows that looked suspicious–just trees and woodlands as far as the eye could see.
“Pull over,” Massimo ordered suddenly.
Massimo barely waited for the car to stop before opening the door and running out. Elena quickly followed behind. In the distance, she could hear the driver swearing.
But Elena was focused on Massimo–and then she was focused on the area around them.
Elena thought she knew what the aftermath of a mafia fight looked like. She thought she had a decent idea of the amount of blood and carnage mafia men could leave behind. But she hadn’t–she didn’t know a thing.
Elena could barely keep her head held high as the smell of blood and death soaked the air. She didn’t want to look at the mangled bodies lying on the ground, but she had a job to do.
Massimo immediately picked up his phone. “Luca, track my coordinates and send them to Gavino. I want both of you here ten minutes ago.”
Elena and Massimo went to work checking over the bodies. Massimo would see if he could find a pulse or any sign of life before calling Elena over to diagnose their injuries.
Eventually, Luca and Gavino arrived. Elena quickly took command of the situation. Though she had helped out in crises before, this felt different.
For one thing, there were very few survivors. Elena wasn’t confident she could’ve saved more lives if she was treating these people in a hospital. Whatever Tyler had done to them, he had been cruel and deadly in all his
actions.
And despite it all, Elena was the most qualified to help. But she felt so unprepared. As she treated the few survivors and helped many more men pass away more comfortably, she couldn’t feel anything but guilt.
If she had brought more supplies or had arrived earlier, maybe things would’ve turned out differently. Elena sighed as she felt another of Massimo’s men breathe their last breath.
Massimo frowned.

“I’m sorry,” Elena said quietly. “I wish I was a better doctor. Maybe someone else could’ve saved-”
“Don’t say that,” he replied instantly. “Elena, when I saw what Tyler did to them, I expected everyone to be dead. If a different doctor was here, there would be no survivors.”
Elena swallowed her sadness. Massimo was right. She needed to stop feeling guilty and focus.
“Someone’s waking up!” Luca cried.
Massimo and Elena ran over. The subordinate’s forehead had been bandaged, but Elena hadn’t been able to confirm how badly the injury was. As his eyes fluttered opens, Elena held her breath.
“D–Don Massimo,” the subordinate slurred.
“Who did this?” Massimo asked. “Who attacked you? Was it Tyler Morello?”
