Massimo crumbled the paper hand.

It was clear Tyler was simply taunting him. And it was equally obvious Tyler would always use any information he could to cause Massimo’s downfall. But was there anything more to this note than that?

What “secret” could this note be referring to? Massimo was certain Tyler had neither been to the Ferraro estate nor Massimo himself ever since he rescued Elena from his clutches. If Tyler had any damning information, Massimo was confident the snake would’ve used it back then.

But there was one obvious way Tyler could learn new secrets–Leo had visited Massimo’s banquet a little over a week ago. Or there could be an unknown spy, some traitor hidden within Massimo’s servants or subordinates.

What could they have seen? What could they have learned? And how could that lead to Massimo’s downfall?

Excluding business deals, Massimo didn’t have many secrets that could cause him any real problems. Panic suddenly gripped Massimo’s heart–had Tyler somehow found out about his arrangement with Elena?

Massimo forced himself to relax. That was a foolish thought brought on by fear, not reason. There was no way Tyler could’ve found out about a contract Massimo and Elena had signed so recently–and besides, Massimo had the only copy of it locked in his office.

This had to be Tyler merely bluffing. The idiot was trying to get under his skin, and Massimo wouldn’t fall for the man’s tricks.

Massimo let the paper fall to the ground.

“If you’re done,” Elena said seriously, “we need to let this man rest.”

Elena and Luca helped the injured man get in a more comfortable position.

“I need to know what they know,” Massimo told her.

“You handle your affairs,” Elena replied. “I’m sure your skills are better suited elsewhere. I’ll deal with the patients and I promise I’ll get you whatever information they have.”

Massimo nodded. Elena was right. His skills, specifically as a mafia man and trained fighter, were better used somewhere else.

After all, someone needed to figure out how things got so out of control. Massimo owed it to his dead subordinates to at least learn that much.

He looked over the bloody field. Based on the injuries he’d seen, it seemed like his men were mostly attacked from afar. Massimo did the math and figured out what angle most of the bullets had come from.

He walked into the woods, keeping a close eye on the ground. There! Plenty of broken branches and woven together leaves–perfect for hiding a small group of people from sight.

It was a trap, Massimo realized. All Tyler needed to do was lure Massimo’s subordinates into the woods, hide, and then pick them off with heavy weapons. The casings of the bullets his enemies used were giant–Tyler must’ve spent serious money on new guns fit to tear people apart with one shot.

Elena meanwhile kept her promise. She ensured all her patients had their physical injuries treated, but then she asked them questions about what had happened here.

Few could respond. Even fewer were coherent. But Elena did learn a few things.

Most importantly, Tyler and his new mystery woman were here. There might’ve been more people, but if there were, no one got a good look at them. As it was, people barely saw the mystery woman.

“She’s… the same height as him, I think?” one said.

“Wearing… green?” a man replied hesitantly after a long moment.

“I saw her,” one confessed. “Her eyes… were like jades. Like a glowing green…”

It didn’t take long for Massimo, Elena, Luca, and Gavino to regroup and share what they had learned.
