The date of the wedding was less than a month away, which meant Massimo and his subordinates needed to act quickly. Which meant that the Ferraro estate was very busy.
Elena did her best to help out. Massimo had followed her advice and let the wedding venue be somewhere important to the couple. It turns out Gavino and his soon–to–be–wife had gone camping in the woodlands of Maine several times–it was also their first real date location. So Massimo had allowed the wedding ceremony to take place in the woods.
While this wouldn’t be as opulent and luxurious as a destination wedding abroad, they would still have to make it beautiful and fit for high–ranking mafia members. After all, with the Don of All Dons footing the bill, it would have to still be impressive.
And Elena had a great idea of how to do that.
“Massimo, what if we ask the Grasso family for some advice?” Elena suggested. “You must have noticed how perfect their garden was set up for their tea party.”
Massimo paused for a moment, thinking. “It would be helpful,” he agreed, “but I don’t want anyone thinking the Ferraro family can’t host this wedding on our own.”
“I understand, but think of it a different way,” Elena continued. “The Grasso family clearly has expertise we don’t and if we want to form a strong alliance with them, asking them for their opinion is a great low stakes way to strengthen that connection. It will make their family feel important if the Ferraros want their advice.”
After a long moment, Massimo relented. “Fine, I’ll ask if I can speak to their gardeners and landscapers,” he finally said. “Now, can you see how the flower arrangements are coming along?”
“Yes, of course,” Elena replied with a smile.
Elena knew her plan would work, and she was even more pleased that Massimo hardly took any convincing to agree to it. With a quick bow, she excused herself from Massimo’s presence and went to check on the flowers.
The flower shop wasn’t owned by the Ferraros or any directly allied families. Instead, it was backed by the Martins, who were admittedly a rather small mafia family. Massimo had expressed a great deal of doubt over their ability to provide the number and quality of arrangements, but Elena reminded him that with the time crunch, they didn’t have much of a choice.
To her great surprise, Elena was very pleased by the mock–ups the store clerk showed her. They were exactly: advertised, and the clerk assured her that they could handle the large wedding rush order.
The only problem with Elena’s visit was who she ran into on her way out of the shop.
“Elena, what a nice surprise,” her step–mother greeted her. “I just came here to get a sma father–to celebrate his recovery, of course. What are you doing here?”
“Work,” Elena replied tersely. “Which I had just finished, so if you’ll excuse me-”
“Ah, flowers for the Ferraro’s subordinate’s wedding, I’m guessing?” her step–mote rep reminds me of something important I wanted to discuss with you. It’ll just take a qui
