“Just remember that all families will be there,” her step–mother whispered. “And that it’s not in New York. So you can expect Don Tyler Morello to attend.”
Elena froze in her tracks, her hand barely brushing the door’s handle. Her step–mother was acting so differently from what Elena expected. It was almost like she genuinely wanted to help Elena.
But Elena knew that couldn’t be true. Her step–mother was definitely just playing some mind game.
“Why are you telling me this?” Elena hissed.
“I just want to treat you like my real daughter,” her step–mother said quietly. “I know I haven’t been the best mother to you so you might not trust me, but I’m trying to look out for your happiness, Elena.”
Her step–mother took a deep breath. “That’s why I agreed with your father about you marrying Don Morello, but if you can find happiness working for the Don of All Dons, then that’s just as good.”
Elena didn’t know how to reply to that statement, so she didn’t. She simply left the shop.
Back at the Ferraro estate though, Elena couldn’t stop replaying her conversation with her step–mother. Had her step–mother really changed? Or was this more of her fake niceness being put on display?
Luckily, Elena was so busy dealing with wedding preparation that she could barely spare any of the Vitales a thought. There was lighting, seating, catering, and clothing to be decided–and that’s just what Elena was directly responsible for! She knew she was in for a lot of overtime work.
Time flew by in an instant. With the date of the wedding mere days away, Massimo insisted he and Elena head to the venue early.
“Just to make sure everything is in place,” Massimo stated. “I want to leave nothing to chance.”
Elena found it endearing how focused Massimo was on making Gavino’s wedding perfect. And she knew that while Massimo’s personal taste had gotten better, it was still far from normal–for the sake of the bride, Elena knew she had to triple–check Massimo’s work herself.
“Sounds good to me,” Elena agreed with a smile.
They took one of Massimo’s smaller luxury cars. Despite being in the middle of nowhere, they didn’t get lost. They arrived on time at the small campsite that would serve as their home–base before the wedding.
Some of the Ferraro subordinates immediately greeted them and showed off their progress. Despite only having a camp kitchen to work with, Elena had no doubts about how wonderful the food would be. And the lighting solution of using discrete solar power operated tech had achieved just the exact results Elena had imagined.
Elena was feeling very confident that Gavino’s wedding would be wonderful for everyone who attended.
After having been shown around, Massimo and Elena chatted with Massimo’s subordinates.
“I’m just pleased everything has been coming together exactly as you wanted it,” one subordinate said. “We want everything to be precise.”
“Your work ethic is appreciated,” Massimo replied.

“It is a little odd though, if you don’t mind me saying so, sir,” the subordinate continued, “We’d expect these sorts of instructions for your wedding, not Gavino’s.”
“Yeah,” another agreed. “Why didn’t you do something this lavish at least for your own wedding?”
