Everyone turned to Massimo as he continued to speak. While normally people were drawn in by his power and importance, this time people listened because of the sincerity and passion with which he spoke.

“The mafia world is cruel–none of us would dare dispute that,” Massimo said, “and its cruelty is often inflicted on those it tries hardest to protect. Why would I offer up the woman I love most to it? If I make a deal to protect something precious, I mean to keep it.”

No one said a single word. Elena herself was too stunned to speak. Massimo was honest and blunt at times, but never with his feelings–and never like this.

As Massimo looked at Elena, she knew these words were not meant for her. They must be how Massimo really felt about his ex–wife, Aria. How he still might feel.

But that didn’t stop the warmth that crept from her heart.

“Well spoken, my don,” a new voice cried out.

The groom was standing a little ways away. He was dressed in a rugged outfit that had clearly seen better days- perfect clothes for doing some outdoor maintenance.

“You’re early,” Massimo said. “You’re not supposed to be here for another two days.”

“I’m finally marrying the woman I loved most–can you blame me for being impatient?” Gavino countered sweetly. “Besides, it’s my wedding. I ought to do some work to set it up, no?”

Massimo and Gavino began to talk over details of the wedding preparations. Elena couldn’t help but smile as she watched Massimo loosen up. He’s no longer cold with everyone these days–he actually was getting along quite well with his subordinate, despite disagreeing on some of the finer details of the wedding.

It felt like a sign of good luck for the upcoming big day.

Elena and Massimo worked tirelessly for the next few days. They worked so tirelessly in fact that on the day of the wedding, there wasn’t really anything for Elena to do besides get dressed up and attend the afternoon wedding ceremony.

Now that she had a spare moment to herself, Elena decided to text her husband.

“How are you holding up?” she asked. “After today, I should finally have some free time again. I was thinking we could maybe catch a movie soon?”

“Can we wait a little longer to schedule our first date?” he immediately replied. “Work has been busy on my end, too. So I haven’t had any time to prepare.”

Elena sighed. She had expected this reaction. Though they had been able to send small update messages, Elena hadn’t been able to bring up the topic of rescheduling their meeting until now–it was a decision she was regretting.

“I understand,” Elena texted back, “but I don’t see how thislation.ship will ever work if we never get to know each other and meet up. I mean, I can’t even describe whk like–and I don’t even know my husband’s own name!”

“But you know the important things,” her husband argued. “We know each other’s favorite foods, hobbies, ways to relax. And we’ve already proven that we have a strong, trusting relationship.”

Elena thought back to how she still hadn’t told her husband about her kiss with her boss. Bringing it up now though felt cruel. And even though Elena suspected he wouldn’t mind it, Elena still felt a little guilty over it.

“But it’s not as strong as it could be,” Elena insisted. “We can figure out the details later, but let’s just bite the bullet and meet up in two month’s time. Does that sound fair?”

It took a long time for her husband to answer. Elena had given up on receiving a reply and finished getting dressed for the wedding by the time her phone buzzed again.

Her husband’s text simply read, “Okay.”
