Elena took a deep breath and looked away from the audience. She instead looked ahead at the former priest turned mafia man and Gavino. Elena was determined to focus on the wedding.
She watched as the bride walked down the aisle, flower petals scattering as she approached the altar. From one look the couple shared, Elena could tell the bride and groom clearly love each other. Though Elena had never met Gavino’s fiancée, she knew in her heart that the two would make a happy couple.
As Elena watched them exchange vows, she couldn’t stop her heart from aching. The two swore to be loyal to each–a standard wedding vow, but one Elena herself had broken.
Elena was sitting here with her boss instead of her husband. She had kissed and touched Massimo more than she had her husband, who still didn’t want to meet her in person. And while it was easy to get annoyed over his refusal to see each other, Elena had to admit that she hadn’t been a perfect partner either.
She was pretending to be married to a different man! There was a reason Elena’s gut instinct was to dismiss the offer–it was insane that her husband had even agreed to it. And now Elena’s feelings were all jumbled up.
If she could just see her husband in person, maybe everything would be okay. Maybe Elena would be able to actually make their relationship work despite their busy schedules. Maybe Elena would really grow to love this mystery stranger like she was supposed to.
But he didn’t want to meet up. And Elena was still playing wife to another man.
At this rate, Elena had no idea how they were ever going to fix their relationship and become a real married couple.
As the ceremony finished, everyone headed to the reception. While the proper ceremony was outside, Massimo had talked Gavino into having an indoor reception. Massimo had managed to find an old camping building that he had remodeled into a two–story, story book castle that was perfect to host a party in.
While Elena admired how nicely all the decorations came together, she paid more attention to the guests. She wanted to make sure no trouble occurred on this special day.
The attendants were mostly mafia men, but Elena did spot the odd retired cop here and there. And considering the fiasco with their original priest, Elena wasn’t making any assumptions about their mafia knowledge. Luckily, no one was discussing mafia business out in the open so there were no secrets to be overheard.
Massimo quickly left Elena on her own to talk to other mafia families. Elena was sure he was out on one of the balconies, finalizing deals with Don Albano and Don Grasso. The need for privacy at such a large event was probably why Massimo had insisted on adding all the balcony spaces in the first place.
“You don’t look like you’re having fun, Elena.”
Elena spun around. Her half–brother, Matteo, was at her elbow. He held two drinks in his hand and was offering one out to her.
“I’m working,” Elena replied.
“At a wedding party?” Matteo pressed.
“Yes,” Elena hissed. She pushed the offered drink awa

Matteo shrugged and downed both drinks, one after the other. “That sucks,” he said sympathetically.
Elena went back to scanning the crowd. Matteo didn’t move.
“Do you want something?” Elena sighed. “If you have a message from our father or Tyler for me, get it over with.

“I mean, they probably want to talk with you, but I don’t know anything,” Matteo replied. “I just wanted to see how you were doing.”
Elena turned to face her brother. Matteo had never been a good liar–the few times he made the effort and tried, Elena had easily seen through him. But she could tell from one look at his face that her half–brother wasn’t lying to her now.
