It was only after a minute or two of silence that Elena had realized how harshly she had spoken. Though she wouldn’t apologize for her opinion, she debated if she should apologize for her tone. After all, Matteo still did live with their father–she couldn’t expect him to see the truth of their father’s horribleness.
But Matteo spoke up first.
“It’s not good,” he agreed. “That’s why I think I should try to learn more from other families. I just need to make some connections first.”
Elena gestured to the ballroom full of people. “No better time than the present,” she said with a grin. “Though if you want, I can see if someone under Massimo needs help-”
“No, I’m fine,” Matteo replied quickly. Was it just the lighting or was Matteo looking a little pale. “I should do it myself.”
“That’ll be hard,” Elena warned. She did feel a little pity for Matteo–he hadn’t learned half the lessons she had to, what with their parents spoiling him so much. “So stick with it, alright?”
Matteo nodded. “I should be able to handle this much,” he insisted. “But first, you need to have some fun.”
Elena was confused. “Like I said, I’m working right now.”
“Doing what?”
“Watching for trouble,” Elena explained. “Between Tyler and our parents, there’s plenty of people I need to keep an eye on—”
“Or I could do it,” Matteo suggested. “I can distract our parents easily. And Don Morello isn’t so different from them, so I can distract him, too.”
“No,” Elena insisted. “Don’t you dare approach Tyler. There’s a reason everyone sane avoids him–you’re not even ranked, so if you get in his way, things will go badly.”
Elena needed to stress this point. Tyler Morello was dangerous to even powerful men. To her idiot half–brother who had just grown a heart, just being annoying to Tyler could be fatal.
Matteo threw up his hands. “Then just our parents then,” Matteo said. “Don’t worry about them and have fun with your new husband for a little bit.”
Matteo pointed in the direction of one of the balconies. It took a moment for Elena to see Massimo shutting the balcony door and reentering the ballroom–there were a few large flower vases placed at each door that blocked her view. Which, now that Elena was thinking about, was probably another reason Massimo had insisted on the vases being there.
Massimo caught her staring and waved. Elena waved back.
“Fine,” she told Matteo. “Just don’t let our parents–or yourself–get into any trouble.”
“Roger that,” Matteo replied. “Now go have fun!”
To her great surprise, Elena did have fun. It was ea
