Chapter 207

Elena felt restless as she followed Massimo and Luca to Massimo’s office. Luca closed the door and took a breath before speaking.

“I’m afraid that Matteo Vitale suffered an accident on his return home,” Luca stated evenly. “According to eye witness reports, a truck came out of nowhere and crashed into him not too far from the border of New York over in Vermont.”

Elena felt her feet start to buckle under her. She grabbed onto the desk and leaned onto it for support. Elena closed her eyes and willed herself to focus–this was no time to panic.

“When?” Elena asked simply.

“Four hours ago,” Luca stated.

Elena narrowed her eyes. If she and Massimo had been faster, they could’ve been back at the estate by then. They could’ve been able to respond as soon as they heard about the accident…

“He has already been transferred to St. Camillus Hospital,” Luca continued, his voice never wavering. “Since he wasn’t too far from the hospital, they were able to start treating him immediately. The staff reports he’s stable as of now, though he is currently in a coma.”

Now that she knew her half–brother was relatively safe, Elena was able to focus on t

details Luca had shared. And she couldn’t help thinking that this felt like a familiar story. Elena glanced at Massimo and could instantly tell he was thinking the same thing.

“This sounds like Tyler’s doing, doesn’t it?” Elena said, voicing their theory. “And Tyler did see Matteo break a vase at the wedding party, which warned us about Tyler’s presence ahead of time. If he was trying to spy on us, that would’ve ruined Tyler’s plan.”

“Not to mention how your half–brother pulled you off the balcony before Tyler could talk to you,” Massimo added. “That bastard is a petty snake–he’s held grudges and pulled triggers for less.”

Massimo turned back to Luca. “I trust you have a report with all relevant data?”

Luca nodded. He pulled out a thin tablet and, after tapping the screen a few times, handed the device to the don. “Of course, Don Massimo,” Luca replied, “everything I’ve gathered is there.”

Massimo scrolled through several pictures of the crash, careful not to let Elena see. Just as he recalled, the street wasn’t too different from the busy road Tyler had staged for Elena all those months ago. And just as Elena had to pass a certain road to get home, Matteo had to pass through this road to get back into New York–which meant it was the perfect opportunity to try to harm him.

As Massimo found pictures of just the vehicle that had caused the accident, he finally showed the tablet to Elena. He held up the device to her, careful to not let go of the tablet.

“This looks very similar to the car that tried to hit you months ago, doesn’t it?” Massimo asked.

“It looks like the exact same model,” Elena responded. “Do you think he gets them from one of the automobile dealerships he owns? He could easily get more cars and make it look like an order for his work rather than his own personal use.”

“It’s worth investigating,” Massimo replied. He turned to Luca. “Who owns the car?” he asked.

Luca shook his head, clearly frustrated. “I’m afraid no one know. The car sped away after the accident and the police have yet to catch the culprit’s trail,” Luca explained.

Massimo frowned. Of course, this couldn’t be that simple. At least the mafia don had a clear goal to work to.

“Elena,” Massimo said gently, “I’ll take care of this. You can go rest or visit your half–brother in the hospital if you’d like.”

It was Elena’s turn to frown. “No, let’s take care of this together,” she replied.
