Elena couldn’t eat –she could barely breathe as the movie continued. The waitress‘ husband barely saw her outside of work, and they talked even less–was this the future that awaited Elena if she stayed married to her. husband?
But the waitress‘ friends saw her struggle and helped her raise enough funds to leave and start a new life elsewhere, somewhere far away from her uncaring husband and her doctor turned affair partner. The waitress was even able to start her own business. She seemed much happier there than she ever did in that small town.
As the credits rolled, Elena thought quietly to herself. Elena had forgotten why she started working with Massimo in the first place–to raise enough money to leave the mafia for good.
But didn’t Elena have enough money to do that now? Elena did have more debt than the waitress in the movie did, but most of it was settled or close to being settled thanks to Massimo’s generous wages. Sure, Elena would have less than the waitress‘ funds at her disposal, but not by much.
Didn’t Elena have enough to run away somewhere in the middle of nowhere, where the mafia didn’t have much of or any of a presence? So long as her family and Morello never found out where she went, Elena would be okay.

After all, no one had recognized the Mafia Queen as Elena Vitale until Tyler’s advisor had loudly made the connection–Elena was sure she could pass as a civilian out in the Midwest. She’d probabl for the first few years, but Elena was used to struggling. It’s not like growing up a Vitale, school, or living on her own had been easy–Elena would manage starting over from scrat dignity, and persistence.

The silence in the car felt more real to Elena now, but she wasn’t resolved to break it. She was content to think more about her eventual getaway—and whether she should tell her mystery husband about it. He had claimed he would follow wherever she went, but Elena wasn’t sure how much she could trust his word.
Massimo’s voice startled Elena out of her musings. “I didn’t know what that movie was about,” Massimo stated simply. “I wouldn’t have taken you to see it if I did.”
Elena was shocked by Massimo’s words. Had her thoughts of running away shown on her face?
“It must not have been fun to see that waitress struggle on screen,” Massimo continued. “But you have to know your mother never suffered because of you.”
“Excuse me?” Elena replied immediately.
Massimo glanced at her earnestly.
“The protagonist’s story was a little too similar to your mother’s, wasn’t it?” he asked. “Didn’t you say your mother used to work as a waitress to make a little extra cash before your father became a capo? And she was really worried about your health before you were even born, so she scheduled a lot of extra doctor visits?”
Elena had forgotten that the waitress in the movie was pregnant and that’s how she first met the small town doctor–it had seemed like an unimportant detail when Elena’s mind was so focused on her unfaithfulness and need to leave town.
As the shock wore off, Elena found herself touched that Massimo remembered so many little, insignificant details about her family and her mother in particular.

“The scene with the waitress giving her daughter that plush bear doll,” Massimo continued haltingly. “That must’ve been especially hard for you to watch, Elena. I promise I’ll do more research for our next movie.”
Elena couldn’t help but smile at Massimo’s thoughtfulness. “I’m looking forward to our next movie night then, “she replied.
The two were exhausted when they returned home. With their late state and the movie stop, they arrived back in New York at nearly three in the morning.
Luca was already waiting for them at the front door. As Massimo’s second–in–command, he had stayed home instead of going to the wedding–someone needed to be ready in case the Ferraro territory was attacked. And judging by Luca’s serious expression, it was a good thing he had stayed behind.
