Elena did not question what “deal” Joshua and Massimo had agreed to. She merely began to work with Joshua at the dining room table since Massimo had insisted they not go into his office and show mafia secrets to an outsider. Instead, the two took over the table with notebooks, printed photographs, and notes from the case that Elena and Massimo had worked so hard on.
Massimo couldn’t stop staring at Elena and Joshua as they worked. Even when Luca retrieved a laptop, they navigated the footage from the police cruiser without any trouble. They had to stay close together as they shared the laptop screen, but neither Elena nor Joshua seemed to mind.
Massimo recalled how many times Elena had pulled away from Massimo at the wedding and frowned.
Elena and Joshua wasted no time and got to work. Unfortunately, the police car’s camera hadn’t been at the right angle to get the full license plate–in the clearest photos, they were able to make out only the very last ending symbol. But just as Elena was about to despair, Joshua pulled up a new photo.
Elena gasped while Joshua swore. Massimo immediately walked over to them.
“I can’t believe it,” Elena breathed.
This last photo was the clearest yet and they could finally see who was in the car. Though he was wearing a hat and sunglasses, the person driving was unmistakably Tyler. But even more intriguing was the fact there was someone in the passenger’s seat.
could tell
The glare of the sun caught on the passenger’s side of the window, helping obscure her face, b from the wisps of red hair that fell on Tyler’s shoulder that the other person was a woman. It was hard to see since her clothing was made of the same fabric as the car’s seats, but Elena could swear she saw the folds of a
dress.
“So this is Tyler Morello’s new girlfriend then?” Joshua asked.
Massimo frowned. “How do you know about that? Tyler hasn’t been spotted in New York in months.”
“Out of state news,” Joshua explained simply. “The mafia isn’t the only connected information network, for the record.”
“It’s most likely the new girl he’s been spotted with,” Elena said slowly, “but I don’t think they’re dating.”
Massimo frowned at that. “Why do you think that?” he asked.
“They’re not exactly lovey–dovey in this picture,” Elena explained. “There’s space between them. And besides, who takes their date on a hit and run?”
Elena could tell the two men weren’t convinced.
“Think about it though, Tyler is known for being charming before he pulls off anything wicked or cruel. He knows how to be romantic when he wants,” Elena insisted.
“So if she’s not his girlfriend, who is she?” Joshua asked.
“I think she might be his advisor or a new assistant,” she said simply.

Massimo furrowed his brow. “But we heard that he’s been taking his girlfriend on dangerous missions before,” he insisted. “Hell, she was spotted at that bloodbath a while back.”
“But did Tyler ever actually call her his girlfriend?” Elena shot back. “No one on his side or under his power has reported that Tyler has a new partner. We could just be jumping to conclusions.”
Massimo only grunted in response.
“It’s good not to rule out any possibility,” Joshua suddenly stated. “You could be onto something, Elena— especially if Tyler’s actions suddenly have more strategy behind them. The fact he’s been careful not to be spotted could point to a new ally in his corner.”
Joshua stretched before straightening back up. “I should head out–I have a case to prepare for this evening.” Elena smiled at Joshua and bowed her head. “Thank you so much for your help.”
She reached for the flashdrive but Joshua’s hand stopped her. Again, Massimo noticed how Elena didn’t even flinch at the unexpected contact.
