“Don’t worry,” Elena said, “if we find Tyler and this mystery woman, we won’t kill them.”

Elena’s promise was good enough for Joshua. The lawyer nodded, wished them the best of luck, and left the

estate.

Elena and Massimo renewed their search with much vigor, determination, and enthusiasm. Unfortunately, the fact was that knowing Tyler was directly behind the attack did nothing to help narrow down the don’s whereabouts. And since they knew nothing about the mystery woman besides that she had red hair and green eyes, they couldn’t track her down either.

Finally, Massimo declared they needed a break. “We won’t find anything new by throwing ourselves against a brick wall like this,” he insisted. “So let’s stop for a bit and make a care package for your half–brother.”

Elena was surprised by the suggestion, but not opposed to. With Massimo’s help, she filled a large basket with comfortable pajamas, non–caffeinated teas, and a few plain snacks. The moment she was done, Massimo wordlessly retrieved his car keys and ushered her into one of his cars.

“Where are we going?” Elena asked.

“To St. Camillus,” Massimo replied. “I got you a special visitor’s pass. You can visit your brother even though visiting hours ended an hour ago.”

Though Elena was nervous to see her half–brother and judge his recovery with her own eyes, s needed to see him. Otherwise, Elena might never forgive herself.

Massimo opened the car door for Elena. Despite the late hour, the hospital’s lights were all on–no matter what time it was, someone was in need of medical care.

“Thank you,” Elena said softly. “For taking me here and helping me get all this stuff and just… everything, I

guess.

Massimo nodded stiffly. The wedding was practically a day ago and Elena had been so cold and avoidant then. He wasn’t used to seeing her warm smile and hearing her soft, gentle voice directed at him.

Maybe she did still like him. Massimo quickly tried to recall the dating advice he had all but discarded after he thought he no longer needed it.

He was supposed to “be there” when his partner was having a hard time—the injury of Elena’s half–brother definitely counted. “Be there” must mean being physically present, right?

“Do you want me to come in with you?” Massimo offered.

Elena quickly shook her head. Massimo’s face nearly fell–until he saw that Elena was still smiling.

“No, if Matteo wakes up and sees you, he’ll get scared right back into a coma,” Elena joked. She glanced back at the hospital building. “Besides, I should do this alone.”

Though the dating advice had failed Massimo once more, he couldn’t feel sad. Elena wasn’t avoiding Massimo, and she had even smiled and joked with him. Elena had her usual determined expression on her face—that was the only thing that mattered.

“Okay,” Massimo said softly. “Call if you need anything.”

Elena quickly found her half–brother’s room. He was lying quietly on a hospital bed, his body hooked up to half a dozen different machines.

Elena knew that talking to a coma patient could help their recovery, so she took a deep breath and tried to talk normally to her half–brother.

“Hey, Matteo… I brought you a gift,” she said as she placed the gift basket on his empty nightstand. “Nothing really exciting though.”

“I should’ve brought you a blanket instead of pajamas,” she continued, her voice beginning to fail her. “I’ll bring one next time. I guess it’s even hard for a doctor to think straight when it’s her own family member who’s hurt…”

Elena couldn’t stop staring at Matteo’s injuries. There were cuts along his face from glass and asphalt, he had a few broken bones, and there was fresh gauze along both his legs. She couldn’t bring herself to check his chart.

“Fuck,” Elena swore. She could feel the tears she’d been holding back all day finally start to drip out. “How can people do shit like this?”

As Elena silently willed her tears away, she felt enraged. “It’s just not fair,” Elena said. “T -how can anyone stay in this life?”

Elena laughed darkly. She was being hypocritical–the year was half over, and she hadn’t made any strong moves to leave the mafia yet.
