Chapter 211
Elena watched her step–mother’s eyebrows shoot up and her eyes widen, Though she only took a moment to recover and smooth her expression into something more neutral, Elena could tell the woman was surprised to
see het.
Elena had grown up distrusting both her parents. They weren’t good people, and they never had Elena’s best interests at heart. As far as she was concerned, both her father and her step–mother were cruel, power–hungry mafia members.
But the last time they spoke, Alessia had tried to warn her step–daughter. She had told Elena to expect both the Vitales and Tyler himself at the wedding. And strangely, her father hadn’t caused any trouble at all at the wedding–an event Elena had attributed to Matteo’s efforts, but was it possible her step–mother had secretly been helping, too?
Massimo had seemed so surprised Elena had yet to forgive her step–mother. Maybe he was right. It certainly seemed like Alessia was turning over a new leaf and trying to be better.
So instead of leaving, Elena stayed right next to her half–brother.
Alessia walked up to Matteo’s hospital bed. “Oh you poor thing,” she said, tracing her manicured nails along his face. “You didn’t deserve to suffer such a tragic accident, my poor little boy.”
“It wasn’t an accident,” Elena said quietly. If her step–mother was really trying to be better, she deserved to know the full truth.
Alessia looked up at Elena, clearly confused.
“It wasn’t,” Elena repeated. “Your precious Don Tyler Morello was behind the car accident. He even drove the car that struck Matteo himself.”
Alessia gasped, covering her mouth with both her hands. She took several moments to recover.
“You had to have heard the stories about Tyler,” Elena pressed. “You had to have known how easily his favor turns to hatred. Yet you and my father continue to follow Tyler’s whims–so know that this is what all your subservience and blind loyalty gets you.”
To Elena’s shock, her step–mother began to cry. Her eyes filled with tears that slowly and silently began to overflow.
Elena had recalled her step–mother faking sympathy before, but she had never seen her cry–not even once.
Alessia shook her head sadly, dabbing her eyes with the sleeve of her shirt. “You’re right, I should’ve known. Matteo had been talking to your father and I about the same things–about how untrustworthy Don Morello could be.”
Alessia broke into a full body sob. “I should’ve listened to my children sooner…”
Elena clumsily comforted her step–mother. It seemed that after Matteo had been given a second chance, he had tried to get their parents to change, too. And maybe, just maybe, there was real hope for Alessia to become a real step–mother rather than just the second wife of a mafia man.
As Alessia calmed down, she flashed Elena a sad smile. “I’m sorry to only bring you sad news, Elena. I should be

a proper mother and do something kind and happy for once…”

“You don’t have to,” Elena replied. She glanced at her half–brother, still stuck in a coma. “And there’s plenty of sad and unfortunate things happening anyways.”
“I know,” her step–mother continued, “let’s have coffee and some pastries one of these mornings. Have a real mother–daughter day in the park. That is, if you’ll let me, Elena.”
Elena recalled the gift of coffee beans Aria had given her. Surely her best friend would be pleased that the special roast was being used as an olive branch in Elena’s complicated family relationship.
“Sure,” Elena agreed. “I’ll handle the coffee and pastries, and you can find a nice park.”
“I’d like that very much,” her step–mother said with a smile.
