Chapter 213
Massimo stopped in his tracks as he reread the message Elena had sent him–and reread it again and again. But no matter how long he looked, the words on the screen wouldn’t change.
“I think we should get a divorce.”
Massimo’s blood ran cold. It Elena demanded a divorce from her husband, she’d no doubt figure out who her husband really was he was honestly so lucky Elena hadn’t figured it out already. And if Elena learned that her matia boss and her husband were the same person, there was no doubt in Massimo’s mind that Elena would leave and never see him again.
Massimo forced himself to take a deep breath. He needed to be perfectly collected–perhaps there was still a chance for him to talk Elena out of this.
“We haven’t even met yet,” Massimo hurriedly typed back. “Couldn’t we wait to discuss this matter in person?”
“No,” Elena firmly replied. “My mind is made up.”
Massimo began to type out his own reply but spotted three dots and thought better of it. He knew from his experience talking with Elena that it was better to let her say everything she wanted–only then would there be a chance to change her mind.
“I feel our relationship is getting worse, not better,” Elena continued. “Anyways, what’s the point in trying to schedule a meeting? I can’t tell if you even want to see me at all anymore.”
“I do want to see you,” Massimo replied.
“But you keep coming up with excuses to not meet.”
Massimo stared at Elena’s last message. How could he explain his real reason for his constant hesitation without giving everything away? Was there any excuse that could work?
The truth wouldn’t. Massimo couldn’t say, “I love you so much, but if you’ll see me, you’ll know I’m a mafia man and lose all interest in me. You’ll leave me behind and then the one perfect thing in my life will be gone forever–and so I keep pushing back our meeting.”
Massimo sighed. What could he say to her? What would make Elena reconsider her decision?
“I know I have been far from perfect,” Massimo began, “but I promise I want our relationship to work. I can reply to your message faster, if that’s been bothering you. I already said I didn’t mean to ghost you a few months ago.”
No new messages. Massimo started to feel a little nervous–it was from the little ‘Read‘ label that Elena had already seen his message.
“Let me at least plead my case in person,” Massimo continued. “We were already planning a meet up in person anyways–let’s not be too hasty.”
It took a painfully long few minutes for Massimo’s phone to buzz.
“Fine,” Elena replied. “But we need to meet up, face to face, in two month’s time, or we’re getting divorced. I won’t budge on that.”

Elena sighed as she put down her phone. She knew she should try to let her husband down gently, but she needed to rip the band–aid off.
Elena couldn’t keep pretending to be Massimo’s wife while being married to another man. Her feelings were too muddied and confusing–she needed time to sort them out. And Elena only knew she would get that time if she got divorced,
Elena’s phone buzzed. She sighed again and picked it up. She really wasn’t looking forward to having to fight her husband on her ultimatum.
But to Elena’s great surprise, the message she received back wasn’t another argument. Instead, he had simply replied “Okay” and set a time and place to meet–granted, it was at the end of her time limit, but Elena would take it. The location on the other hand…
