Chapter 214
Was she giving her husband false hope that their relationship could work? Or was she being too strict with her boundaries? Whenever it came to her husband, Elena could only be sure that it was complicated.
Just then, Elena’s other phone–the phone she used for mafia business–buzzed. After her last conversation with her step–mother, Elena had unblocked the woman’s number. Now her step–mother Alessia would. frequently text her about Matteo’s condition–not that it had ever changed.
Elena read the message with a small smile. Never in a million years would Elena have expected that her relationship with her step–mother would improve–let alone improve better and faster than Elena’s relationship with her mystery husband.
Things really had gotten complicated. Hopefully they wouldn’t stay that way for long.
After sending up a quick meal to Elena, Massimo re–entered his office. He couldn’t shake the feeling that Tyler was planning something–something big.
But Massimo didn’t want to worry Elena. She had enough to worry about with her half–brother Matteo still being in the hospital. The least Massimo could do was leave Elena out of this mess for as long as he could.
Especially since Massimo had nothing to go on beyond a gut feeling of anticipation and dread.
His second–in–command wasn’t holding that against him though. As always, Luca loyally tracked down Tyler’s bank statements, last known locations and associates, and a whole bunch of information that required specialized–and highly illegal–skills.
“This is the last bit of data I found,” Luca said as he shared the final digital file. “I can’t figure out what he’s planning. The purchases are normal–though I suspect some of these are fake.”
Massimo hummed as he took a long look at all the information Luca had gathered.
“It is fake,” Massimo confirmed. “These are mafia tricks, which means he’s transferring money to some dons- dons with half a brain cell left. We need to crack these codes and find where the money’s going.”
“On it,” Luca said.
There were only a few reasons Tyler would give any don money–and none of them were good. Massimo figured Tyler was either amassing weapons, buying soldiers, or bribing some dons to switch sides. Either way, Massimo knew Tyler was trying to gather allies.
If Tyler was smart, he’d start local–go for some mafia families that were still in New England. That way Tyler would have allies near New York, which was undoubtedly Massimo’s territory.
Massimo took out his phone and called one of his most loyal subordinates.
“Gavino, I know you’re on your honeymoon with your wife in Maine,” Massimo said slowly, “but I need you to look into something. Just keeps your eyes open for any sign that Tyler is up to anything suspicious.”
Try as she might, Elena couldn’t get her conversation with her husband out of her head–more specifically, her doubts about everything. Elena knew her emotions right now were one big tangled knot. The only problem was Elena had no idea how to go about untying it!

Normally, Elena would ask her best friend Aria for advice, but Elena knew better to ask Aria about romance. Aria’s romantic life was no doubt even more complicated than Elena’s–and that was just how Aria liked it. Her best friend wouldn’t be any help.
Elena glanced at her phone. Should she call her step–mother and ask for advice? This was the sort of thing daughters normally asked their mothers about.
Then again, Elena didn’t have a normal relationship with her step–mother. And she had only just begun to repair that relationship… It was probably still too early to ask her step–mother about something this big and personal.
