Chapter 22
Elena got to her apartment, thoroughly exhausted. While her shoulder had healed up, the pain hadn’t fully left, yet Elena would be leaving New York for Las Vegas.
How could her boss want her to go on a business trip with him already? Why would he even need a doctor for this trip? Massimo really wanted to work her ragged, apparently
She got out a suitcase and began packing. Yet her mind didn’t focus on her work trip, but her meeting with her husband. Elena would be getting back Sunday, so she could still meet him for dinner or lunch. Yes, she should have time to meet him.
Elena smiled at the idea of finally meeting this mysterious mechanic. What would he look like? How would he behave?
A mechanic would be patient. Elena knew her husband had to be, since he replied to each of her messages and let her ramble about even the most silly, trivial things. Surely, he was the reliable, steady sort of guy.
His messages weren’t always long, but he never failed to respond. He always seemed to take into account her feelings before he spoke. Her husband was different from any man she met.
Sure, her boss Massimo had looks, but her husband had him easily beat when it came to personality and care.
After packing the essentials, Elena rummaged through her wardrobe. She had a feeling her boss wouldn’t want her to wear a suit. That only left her with one dress that was both in good condition and didn’t look cheap.
Elena had got it while shopping with Aria. Though Elena couldn’t afford to splurge on useless things, Aria had talked her into getting the dress.
“It’s so you!” she had said in that cheery, bubbly voice that could soothe any worry. “Besides, you might need to wear something nice like this for a fancy doctor dinner or award ceremony.”
So Elena had caved and bought the pale pink dress.
Elena laid it out delicately onto her bed. On second thought it felt too precious to spoil that sweet memory with mafia dealings. But it would make for a beautiful first date outfit.
Elena got out her personal phone and snapped a picture of it. She sent the picture off to her husband.
“First meeting preview!”
“I assume you’re wearing that to our first meeting then?”
“Yep! 🙂”
Elena debated taking a picture of herself wearing the dress but decided against it. It’d be more fun to surprise him in person.
“A teaser helps build hype but keeps the mystery alive, y’know? Perfect balance,” she texted.
“If you say so,” came her husband’s instant response.
“I do. So enjoy the anticipation!” Elena grinned as she finished typing the message. It was really fun to talk to her husband–she couldn’t wait to do it in person.
“You got a date?” Aria called from the open doorway. She watched Elena with her own giddy grin. “It’s about time you entered the dating market.”
“Not exactly,” Elena said, her own smile lighting up even brighter. “I’m married, and I’m going to have a date night with my husband.”

“What the heck,” Aria exclaimed. “I knew you were conservative and old–fashioned, but since when are you married? Was this something your family arranged?”
Rather than fully explaining, Elena just nodded along. Mr. Fabio was practically family anyways, and since he set the whole marriage up, it wasn’t technically a lie. That’s at least what Elena told herself.
Aria swore. “Okay, you’re way more old–school than I thought if you had an arranged marriage. When do I get to meet this guy?”
“Some day when you’re both free,” Elena hedged. “He’s a mechanic so work can get busy, but you’d like him. He’s a nice, reliable man.”
“He better be. Or else I’m going to give him an earful,” Aria threatened good–naturally.
“Or you could just give me a really good gift recommendation?”
“Oh, I’m doing more than that.” Aria plopped down on Elena’s bed and motioned for her to do the same. “Tell me everything.”
Elena did tell Aria as much as she could about her husband, which, admittedly, was not a lot. Her roommate, however, was undeterred. Aria pulled details from their text logs when Elena’s own words and knowledge failed her.
Aria also gave plenty of suggestions for gifts, ranging from watches-“a man always needs a reliable watch“-to alcohol-“when in doubt, keep it simple, Elena.” She thought it would be best to go practical since a blue collar worker needed things that could last and stand up to his work’s physical demands. But Aria did say that so long as Elena gave her gift a good amount of thought and care, it was sure to be a hit.
“You should have your date at Caffè Bella,” Aria continued, clearly excited for Elena. “It’s not expensive but the tables are spaced out for privacy. If this is your first meeting in person with this guy, Caffè Bella is the perfect place.”
“Sounds great,” Elena agreed. She sent a text to her husband.
“So, for our date, I’m thinking 8pm at Caffè Bella?”
Massimo’s phone was back in his hands the second he saw it light up. A part of him worried about this new habit of his–that instinctively reaching for his phone made him distracted. But as he sat in his office doing paperwork, he couldn’t find the will to care.
Once Massimo confirmed that his wife sent him a new text message, he really didn’t care at all.
It was nice talking to someone so lively and attentive. His wife always had something unique to say on a topic Massimo had never considered. It was…. cute.
The more he texted with her, the more Massimo had a hard time keeping up his suspicions. It felt ridiculous to claim that the woman who texted him was the same woman who went on countless dates and shamelessly had loud, screaming sex with any man who asked.
It seemed more likely that his wife really did have a roommate, and Massimo had just made a simple mistake.
But, a treacherous part of Massimo’s brain insisted, if his wife really was this innocent and pure and cute, what kind of horrible person would he himself be to drag her into his terrible life? She surely couldn’t survive mafia life. It was hard and cruel and dangerous.
And no one knew that more than Massimo. Yet he would willingly inflict that one someone like this wonderful mystery woman?
Massimo tried to will away the thought. He wouldn’t break his woman. It was far more likely that the second he
