Chapter 23
When her boss had said they’d be flying out to Las Vegas, Elena had not assumed they’d be taking a luxurious private jet. In retrospect, she probably should’ve figured that first class would be a downgrade from the Ferraro’s obviously expensive and decadent lifestyle. But for someone who hadn’t ever flown before, Elena knew she’d never be able to board a plane again.
The jet seats were practically made of clouds. The provided snacks had more options than her local grocery store. And the entire flight was so smooth and painless, Elena was surprised they had even traveled halfway across the
country.
It was a very good thing Elena would likely only ever fly once again after this trip: when she finally had made enough money to escape the mafia life entirely. She knew this experience had definitely spoiled her and any future travel expectations.
Massimo’s men met them at the airport and brought around a black limo. In the spacious back seats, Massimo briefed Elena on the details of their trip.
They’d be spending their time at ABC Casino, one of the Ferraro family’s oldest assets. The casino’s owner and long–term manager had recently fallen ill. Elena’s job would be to figure out why–the current theories were the man’s old age or some hidden ailments–and then treat him.
Elena held back a sigh of relief. At least during this trip, she’d be able to do her normal job of being the Ferraro’s family doctor. Though she couldn’t help but wonder if any don, let alone the Don of All Dons, would go out of their way to provide the best healthcare for a subordinate who didn’t even live anywhere close to them.
“It’s not a textbook case, but he has Type 1 Diabetes,” Elena quickly summarized to her boss. “I’m surprised he’s gone undiagnosed for so long, but after he’s been on medication for a few days, he’ll be right as rain.”
Elena had been relieved to quickly find the cause of the casino owner’s illness. She had always hated delivering bad news. Luckily, she’d investigated and pieced everything together efficiently and confidently.
Massimo nodded his head. “Send someone out to fetch the medication.”
“Already did,” Elena smiled.
“Then you’re dismissed for the day,” Massimo replied. “I have business to discuss with the owner. Feel free to explore on your own.”
Elena was shocked she was already getting dismissed but didn’t protest.
Elena walked out of the backrooms of the ABC Casino. The old place was sturdy in its structure yet flashy in its decorations. Originally, the casino had only consisted of one gambling hall, but as the business boomed, the ABC Casino expanded.
Nowadays, there were five different floors to gamble on. There were even luxury hotel rooms added in more recent years, that way customers could stay up betting late into the night. Elena wasn’t tired, so instead of heading back to the attached hotel, she took an elevator to one of the lower levels.
The reputation of the ABC Casino was well earned. Despite being mafia owned, it was considered a safe haven- Elena didn’t see one gangster openly carrying a weapon.
“You must be Don Massimo’s new doctor,” one of the attendants crowed sweetly. “Is there anything I can help you with? Anything at all?”
If the jet ride hadn’t spoiled her, the treatment of the casing workers definitely did. Between their enthusiasm and patient guidance, Elena was shown many different games. Despite having never gambled before, she won at one of the roulette tables–a tidy $1,000!

Elena briefly wondered if they had rigged the game in her favor. Would they do that for anyone, or only those associated with important mafia figures? It definitely would help the gambler’s fallacy take root in any player’s mind if they won a small sum upfront.
“Elena Vitale,” an unfamiliar voice called out. “My dear, you look like you’re having a ball!”
Elena turned around, but didn’t recognize the man. He cut a sharp figure in his all white tux–his piercing blue eyes and sunshine colored hair stuck out all the more because of his outfit.
But the second Elena saw his golden cane, she froze. Because on the top of the cane was the head of a bronze cobra snake–the symbol of the Morello family. A symbol that only their don could openly carry.
“Good evening, Don Tyler Morello,” Elena whispered, trying to keep her fear in check.
Tyler Morello wasn’t only the devious master of Elena’s father. He was a snake to everyone in the mafia world. He was clever, cunning, and downright cruel.
Still, people flocked to the playboy, tricked by his womanizing persona. They never expected he would trap them in a devil’s bargain and walk away with everything they ever loved. The desperate and prideful would seek him out like a holy charm.
There were plenty of gamblers in the mafia world, and thus Tyler Morello had no shortage of followers.
Elena recalled the rumors of how Don Morello had entered contract with a branch family of the Lombardis. The man desperately wanted his kidnapped wife and daughter back–desperate enough to pay Morello with the deed to the Lombardi family’s prized company.
The wife and daughter were returned to him–in body bags
Elena shivered. Looking at Tyler Morello in the flesh as he wore a serpent’s smile, she knew the rumors had to be
true.
“I hope you enjoy your evening,” she said as calmly as she could, “but I must be going now.”
Before Elena could make her graceful escape, Don Morello‘ voice cut through the air. Unlike her father, Tyler Morello didn’t need to lift a single gloved finger to make people listen. His voice–a voice that promised danger if it wasn’t listened to–was enough.
“But the night’s so young, my dearest,” he cooed, falling back on his reputation as a harmless flirt–as if Elena could be fooled by that disguise. “Besides, I would love to be accompanied by a woman of your caliber. The best way to get lady luck on your side is to invite a beautiful woman to share your own luck, after all.”
His blue eyes glistened with threats. There was a hunger there, a need to claim–no, a need to break something precious.
