But according to Massimo, one of the Martin family members was involved in her kidnapping. Massimo hadn’t given her many details–rather, he had just stressed that Elena should stay away from the Martin and Dioli families. So it was nice that one of those problems was dealt with.
Elena was actually pretty pleased to hear another unfriendly mafia family was off the board–there was no way the Martins would be able to help the Vitales or the Morellos after this. In fact, the Martins would be lucky if they were still a mafia family in anything but name when everything was done and settled.
“So long as that cops don’t force any of us to give testimony, it’s not my problem,” Lucilla said as she took a sip of her tea.
For once, Elena fully agreed with the woman.
Just a few short days later, it was time for the ribbon cutting ceremony. Elena was pleased to see that Massimo had decided to set up the large, bright ribbon in front of the new wing’s main outer doors–it meant there was plenty of room to set lots and lots of chairs out for visitors.
The giant scissors were, of course, gaudy–Massimo had them made out of gold and gem stones. As every camera flashed, the light reflected off the scissors. The redirected light made Massimo glow like some sort of angel or god.
Massimo turned to Elena. “Would you help me do the honors?” he said, loud enough for the people in the back

Elena nodded. She took the other handle of the scissors and together, in one clean motion, the two cut the
ribbon.

She hadn’t expected them to call her “Doctor” over “Mafia Queen” though.
As Elena looked at the crowd closer, she realized she didn’t recognize any mafia members in the first few rows. They looked like civilians—in fact, several of them had little “Press” badges, letting her know they were just ordinary reporters. Elena glanced at Massimo.
Careful to keep his smile in place, Massimo leaned close. It looked like he was giving her a peck on the cheek- but in reality, he was quickly whispering in her ear.
“I was a little sick of mafia meetings,” Massimo whispered. “So I invited some reporters. I figured you could use a break from being the Mafia Queen.”
Massimo stepped back as the reporters called for Elena. They were asking dozens of questions of her–if it was true she came up with the designs for the renovation, why the hospital needed such things if it was already the best in New York City, and why she opted for some changes over others.
“One moment,” Elena replied, doing her best to keep her voice even. Though it was a little overwhelming and surprising, relief was the main thing Elena was feeling. “I’ll answer everyone’s questions, so just one at a time please–starting with the reporter on the left?”
As Elena was asked question after question, the sense of relief grew into full satisfaction. Elena knew Massimo

wanted to make the ribbon cutting ceremony special and memorable, but by allowing Elena to just be herself- to just be a doctor instead of his fake mafia bride–Massimo had really thought of everything,
The ribbon cutting ceremony lasted much longer than Elena expected. Unfortunately, instead of sleeping in, Elena’s alarm blared on her phone. Elena nearly silenced it on instinct–why did she have an alarm set for five am anyways?
But then she remembered–she was supposed to meet her husband at St. Mary’s today!
