The flight back home was thankfully uneventful. Elena and Massimo were able to return to the Ferraro estate without issue.

But, of course, as soon as they arrived there, Massimo wanted to hear an update from his second–in–command. Elena stood faithfully nearby if there was any issue that arose during their absence, she would need to know about it, too.

Luca already had fully written up reports to hand Massimo. He briefly described a few conflicts that needed to be mediated, but it was nothing major.

“The only remaining thing of any importance,” Luca continued, “is that the renovations for St. Camillus Hospital finished.”

“Already?” Elena asked. Even with the resources of the Ferraro family, she had expected such extensive changes to take another month or two to finish up.

“Yes,” Luca confirmed. “And I can personally assure you, Dr Elena, that no corners were cut–the renovations were completed exactly to your specifications.”

To Elena’s surprise, Massimo was frowning. “I suppose the ribbon cutting ceremony needs to be moved up then?

“I would suggest as much, sir,” Luca stated. “I’ve already started making such arrangements.”

Massimo sighed. “We’ll need to make it just as much of a spectacle as we were originally planning. And we shouldn’t wait too long.”

Elena understood Massimo’s sudden weariness. Though it had been her idea to renovate the hospital, Elena loathed the idea of attending yet another mafia meeting. She had gone to enough of those in California—she would’ve loved to get a break from such events.

Not to mention how grand this ribbon cutting ceremony would need to be. Massimo needed to project power, stability, and wealth–and all on such short notice. Elena didn’t envy his position.

Massimo caught Elena staring. “Elena, make sure our suitcases get upstairs. I won’t be needing your services for today—you can go.”

Elena frowned. “Are you sure? Wouldn’t you like help?”

“That’s what my second–in–command is for,” Massimo retorted. “Go rest, if you’d like. I’ll need your help tomorrow–no sooner.”

It wasn’t that Elena was ungrateful to be given a surprise day off from work. She just felt guilty thinking of all the work Massimo would need to do for the ribbon cutting ceremony. But she couldn’t very well hang around after the don had dismissed her.

If only there was some other way she could help…

Elena suddenly had an idea. She found one of the maids.

It was very lucky Jill Grasso hosted her Women Only tea party like clockwork at the same time and place very weekend. Since Elena had a standing invitation, it wasn’t rude at all for her to show up atmones,

Elena politely nodded as the women got back to chatting. Though Massimo had forbidden her from helping with the ribbon cutting ceremony, it was clear the don was concerned about his enemies. So, since Elena couldn’t help with one problem, she decided to help with the other.

If anything interesting had happened because of her father or Tyler or anyone else, it would surely be the topic of gossip among bored rich women.

“I’m telling you, I heard it from Iris. As Dan Barbieri’s cousin,” Amelia stated, “she’d tell it better than 1.” Iris rolled her eyes. “You shouldn’t draw out bad news like this, Amelia–it’s unbecoming ”
