Massimo held off a curse as his own phone started to ring. He quickly moved to silence it, but then it just switched to loudly buzzing.
“Do you need to take that?” Elena asked innocently–completely unaware that she was the cause of Massimo’s frustration.
He couldn’t answer Elena’s call in front of her! Then she would know her mysterious husband “Max” was actually just Massimo!
“Ah, no,” Massimo quickly stated, desperately trying to think of a believable lie. “It’s… an alarm! Since I have to get back to work, too.”
Out of options, Massimo harshly turned off his phone. “I need to head out now–judging how my, er, coworker was talking earlier, it sounds like I have a long day ahead of me.”
“Right, I forgot mechanics can have such early morning shifts—that’s probably why you picked this time,” Elena stated.
In truth, Massimo had planned on having a busy day–between ordinary mafia work and tracking down Tyler, he really had his hands filled lately. He had hoped that meeting early would mean they wouldn’t get interrupted. But of course, something needed to go wrong anyways, despite Massimo’s careful planning.
“That’s right,” Massimo lied.
Though Massimo could only make out Elena’s outline, he could tell she glanced down at her phone. “That went to voicemail weirdly fast for him,” she muttered.
“Oh, the reception in this place can be unreliable,” Massimo lied.
“Really? It seemed fine earlier.”
“That’s because… you were closer to the front doors, right? It’s usually better there,” Massimo continued. “You should try calling from there.”
“Wouldn’t that be locking you in?” Elena asked kindly. “I don’t want you to be late to work because I’m blocking the only exit.”
“I’ll be fine–I can exit through the church back rooms,” Massimo said simply.
He glanced at the other door on his side of the confessional. This second hidden exit was the whole reason he had chosen the priest’s side of the booth. He hadn’t wanted to risk Elena seeing him enter or leave.
“Well, then, have a good day, Max,” Elena finally said.
“Goodbye,” Massimo replied.
Back at the church’s main entrance, Elena did have better luck calling Massimo. He picked up on the first ring.
“Yes?” he answered.
“It seems Tyler was spotted back in New York, so-”

“We should get back to the estate and debrief? Yes,” Massimo instantly replied. “I’ll see you there.”
Without another word, he hung up. Elena stared at her phone.
“He’s certainly in a hurry,” she muttered to herself.
Looking at the rain pouring outside, Elena wasn’t feeling that same level of urgency. In fact, she was dreading the long trek home on public transport.
But Elena eventually did get back to the Ferraro estate. Though she was soaked because of the rain, several maids immediately had warm towels ready. After drying off a little, Elena headed to Massimo’s office.
Luca and Massimo were already there. While Luca was perfectly calm and collected, Massimo looked disheveled. His hair was slightly messed up and he seemed a little out of breath.
“Dr Elena, you’re just in time,” Luca greeted. “Don Massimo only got here a moment ago-‘
“Let’s skip the pleasantries and get down to business,” Massimo snapped. “Tyler’s in New York?”
Luca nodded. “He was actually spotted in New York City even. He’s long gone at this point, but I did manage to get some of your subordinates to follow him while he was here.”
Elena was instantly overwhelmed by the amount of paper and digital evidence Luca showed off–receipts from stores, secret pictures of Tyler walking down certain streets, dots on a GPS map, and the like were at their fingertips.
Massimo, meanwhile, finally looked a little at ease. “This is good work. We can work backwards from all this and figure out what he was up to,” Masismo said.
“I’ve already started on that, sir,” Luca stated. “But the problem is Tyler didn’t seem to meet up with any mafia members or leave any coded messages. It seems more like he was just taking a day off around the city.”
Massimo frowned. “I’ll be the judge of that.”
Wordlessly, Elena followed Massimo’s lead and started to sort through all the evidence Luca had gathered.
It took much longer than either of them would’ve liked, but eventually, they started to notice little things- hints of a pattern or motive.
Elena frowned as she saw one of the locations Tyler had stopped at. “That’s my old apartment building,” she said, slightly horrified.
Elena looked more closely at some of the shops Tyler had briefly walked into. “And these… weren’t these some of the stores we visited together? When we went shopping for your ex wife?”
Massimo’s brow furrowed before he slowly nodded. “That matches some of the receipts we gathered.‘

Elena leaned over Massimo’s shoulder to look at the receipts herself. Some of them made no sense, but others matched gifts Massimo had either bought his wife or Elena.
Elena wasn’t sure what was going on, but it seemed like Tyler was once again threatening two women in Massimo’s life–the same women he had kidnapped once.
The thought made Elena sick, but she pushed down her discomfort. There was no time to panic now. She had to

help Massimo figure out what was going on.
Massimo frowned as a pattern to Tyler’s actions began to emerge. But what truly bothered Massimo was the specificity with which Tyler acted.
Tyler didn’t just buy duplicates of the gifts Massimo had bought Aria. Rather, Tyler had only bought a blue blouse that Massimo had got Elena instead of the piles of other gifts Massimo had bought Aria—back when Massimo had been tricked into believing she was his wife.
And while Elena was correct Tyler had bought some gifts Massimo had given to his “wife,” the snake had only purchased the first gifts Massimo had bought—a Windsor watch, Newman cigars and Magnanni loafers. The gifts that Massimo had left at Elena’s apartment after he had mistaken that whore of a roommate for his wife. Most damning of all, Tyler had eaten at that little Italian place before leaving New York City entirely–the same restaurant Massimo was supposed to meet Elena but ended up meeting Aria instead.
For a moment, Massimo wondered if Tyler knew that Elena was always his wife. It made no sense, but it would explain Tyler’s actions.
Massimo shook his head. There was no way for Tyler to know that! Tyler was clever and cunning, but he wasn’t psychic.
If Tyler knew, he would’ve had to have been told about it—but that just led to a new problem. Who would’ve told Tyler?
Only Massimo had figured out this complicated ruse. Hypothetically, his grandfather Fabio knew, but the old man wasn’t crazy. He would’ve never leaked such important information to a well known enemy!
Massimo sighed. He didn’t like whatever was going on here–not one bit.
Elena noticed how silent Massimo had gotten during their work. “Everything alright?” she asked.
“Tyler is brazenly trying to rattle us,” Massimo said, clearly annoyed. “But there’s not much we can really do here.”
“Well,” Elena said slowly, “there is something we could try… But I’m not sure if you’ll like it, Massimo.”
