Chapter 225
Massimo huffed. “We’re not getting the cops involved,” he said firmly. “I know that prosecutor is your friend and all, but I’m not-

“It’s not that,” Elena interrupted.
Massimo paused for a moment. Then he raised his hand and gestured for Elena to continue.
Elena takes a deep breath. This suggestion is a little out of her own comfort zone, but she wants to make sure Massimo has thought of all his possible options.
“We could call a meeting of all the mafia dons and get them involved,” Elena slowly states, “just like how Tyler did back on that cruise. They were the ones who declared then that Tyler couldn’t be in New York–and we know have irrefutable proof that Tyler broke the rules of that punishment.”
Elena gestured to the large amount of evidence Luca had gathered for them–photos, eye witness accounts, and the like. It would be impossible for anyone to argue Tyler hadn’t been in New York today.
“If you want to add any other crimes Tyler has committed, like purposefully injuring my half–brother, that’ll make Tyler look even worse,” Elena continued. “But either way, we have proof Tyler has committed one of the greatest sins a mafia man can—he went back on a deal. And not just any deal, but a deal he made with every single mafia don in the country.”
Massimo stayed quite for quite some time. “I’ll admit it’s a tempting idea,” Massimo confessed, “but doing that would be declaring war on Tyler.”
Elena frowned. She didn’t understand why that was Massimo’s main concern. “Haven’t you two always been enemies?” Elena asked.
“I’ve never considered him an ally and always assumed hostile intent with him,” Massimo agreed. “But I never named him a public enemy of mine, which is why he’s still in the mafia. There are certain advantages of us keeping our issues in the background and pretending to be civil in front of all the other dons.”
“Like what?” Elena asked. From her perspective, Massimo’s argument didn’t make any sense.
“Bloodshed,” Massimo said simply.
Elena paled. “But wouldn’t bringing Tyler before all the dons be the peaceful way out of this mess?”
“In theory, maybe,” Massimo replied coldly, “but in practice? We’d have to catch Tyler first, and considering how he handled my men at the border, that snake isn’t going down without a fight. We were lucky last time that skirmish was in the middle of nowhere–we won’t always be lucky.”
Elena could easily picture it. After all, when Tyler had tried to kill her with a runaway car, it wasn’t mafia men who suffered. It was ordinary civilians who got hurt in that terrible accident.
And that was just one crowded intersection. How much damage could a mafia war cause when all the mafia families were involved on one side or the other? The deaths would easily climb into the thousands.
Massimo watched the color drain from Elena’s face as she considered his words. He frowned. He had tried to talk about the matter delicately, but he needed Elena to understand that there was a reason few people called a meeting of the mafia elders–it often caused as many problems as it solved.

And Massimo couldn’t risk New York turning into a war zone. Especially not when Elena was at his side.
Massimo faked a cough, startling Elena from her thoughts. Just because he needed Elena to understand the issue didn’t mean Massimo wanted her to suffer. And since Elena was a pacifist at heart and deeply hated bloodshed, this whole conversation was no doubt getting her upset.
“Anyways,” Massimo said, “it’s an option, but not one I want to take lightly. I’d rather see if we can resolve this as simply and with as few casualties as possible–and seeing as Tyler didn’t do anything violent today, I still have time to check those alternative resolutions.”
