Chapter 231
As the sirens and lights of emergency vehicles slowly overwhelmed Elena’s senses, she found her mind clearing up. As a doctor, she knew the importance of acting quickly in an emergency. Adrenaline shot throughout her body, waking her up–and, unknown to Elena, messing with the chemicals in the drugged coffee enough that she quickly sobered up.
No, for Elena, she merely felt like she was waking up from a dream. And that she needed to act quickly before reality became a nightmare.
Alessia noticed Elena’s sudden attentiveness. “Elena, are you alright? Do you need to sit down-”
“I need to go,” Elena interrupted. She dropped dinner ingredients she hadn’t remembered picking up–but there was no time for confusion.
In an emergency, every second counts. And if there were so many police cars, firetrucks, and ambulances all headed the same way, they surely would take any extra pair of hands they could get.
Alessia, however, was confused by her step–daughter’s urgency. “But I thought we were making dinner, dear,” she said simply. “Weren’t we having so much fun?”
Elena stepped out of the kitchen and searched for her jacket and medical go bag. They were dropped carelessly at the dining table.
“People could very well die if I don’t go now,” Elena said calmly as she gathered her things. “Look at how much smoke has already gathered.”
“If it’s dangerous, shouldn’t you leave that to the experts?” Alessia called back.
Alessia followed after Elena, but the woman was too slow. Elena was already at the door.
“That’s exactly why I have to go,” Elena replied. “After all, I am an expert doctor.”
“At least wait for a cab-” the step–mother pleaded, but it was no use.
Elena was already gone.
Elena ran. She didn’t have time to figure out public transportation or call a cab. Instead, Elena relied on her eyesight, tracking the smoke trails all the way back to their source.
Distantly, Elena was aware the path she dashed was somewhat familiar, but she didn’t think anything of it. She had more pressing concerns taking up her mind. So it wasn’t until Elena was standing in front of the ash- blackened building that she began to realize what was going on.
This building was the little mafia front run by Gavino, one of Massimo’s trusted subordinates.
Elena skidded to a stop, but her mind kept racing. Wasn’t Gavino and his wife supposed to return from their honeymoon today? Had they been in the building when it caught fire?
Were there any others who would be there? Mafia men working late, or maybe civilians who unknowingly were spending money on mafia goods. How many people could fit in the building, and could emergency services handle all of them?

Elena shook her head fiercely. Now wasn’t the time for this.
Elena looked around. Firefighters seemed to already have the building secured–but it didn’t look safe to enter. The ambulances were a flurry of activity, too–it looked like there were at least four doctors for every person on a stretcher Elena spotted.
And the cops were starting to tape the area off. But more importantly, a few officers were talking to a man Elena recognized–Luca, Massimo’s second–in–command. And as Elena looked to the side, she saw the man’s employer, too.
Massimo was just standing in front of the burnt front. He was so perfectly still he could’ve been mistaken for a statue. The cops and other emergency workers gave the mafia don a wide berth as they worked.
Seeing that the emergency was actually under control, Elena walked over to Massimo. His face was completely neutral as he stared straight ahead, not bothering to turn to her. Something about Massimo’s stance told her that she should approach this situation delicately.
“What happened?” Elena asked quietly.
