Chapter 235
Elena pulled out her phone. Silently, she called up her husband Max.
In the distance, she could hear a phone briefly ringing. It sounded like it came from further inside the people- maybe by where the elevator is? Just as soon as Elena goes to follow the sound, the ringing stops.
But her call isn’t answered. It’s declined. But then her phone buzzes with a new text message.
“What’s wrong?” her husband texts.
Though Elena is tempted to just yell or try calling Max again, she doesn’t. She meets him where he’s at and starts texting.
“You know this is the start of every horror movie right?” she writes. “What’s all this even for?”
“The date,” Max explains. “I promise, I put a lot of work into this. But the date will only start once the blindfold is on.”
Elena doesn’t sigh but she does put her phone away. She had been wondering how her husband planned to hold another date–apparently blindfolding his wife was the answer.
Slowly, Elena lifted the blindfold out of the box. The fabric was thick and dark. The second she placed it over her eyes, her vision was completely obscured–she couldn’t even make out any lights or shadows.
Elena tied off the blindfold. There was also some adhesive on it, keeping it in place even as she turned her head in every direction.
“Max?” Elena called out. “It’s on–you can come out.”
Elena heard footsteps, but it was hard to pinpoint where they were coming from. She could barely remember the room’s layout either.
“Relax,” Max’s deep voice was suddenly in her ears. “You’re very tense. This is supposed to be a fun date, remember?”
Elena forced herself to take a deep breath and calm down. “It’s just a very weird experience,” Elena admitted. “I have no idea what’s happening.‘
“Tell me if we’re going too fast then,” her husband replied. “Are you good if we start now? I need to take you somewhere first.”
Elena took another deep breath. She did want to give Max’s date a try.
“Okay,” she said breathily. “Just help me out as we go–I don’t want to trip and fall.”
“Anything for you,” her husband replied.
Max put a steady hand on Elena’s wrist and guided her… somewhere. She’s pretty sure they ended up in the elevator at some point–there was definitely the sound of her sneakers hitting metal instead of the tiled flooring of the rest of the building.
Elena had to rely on her husband entirely as they moved out of the elevator and onto a new floor. But instead of being annoyed at the lack of sight, her ears pricked up in delight.

There was a beautiful yet delicate orchestral soundtrack playing as Max led her deeper into the room. The strings of each violin and cello sounded so clearly, it felt like live musicians were playing And whoever was playing some kind of flute—as well as the piccolo player–seemed like experts, if not outright prodigies.
Interestingly, there wasn’t even that static quality to any of the percussion instruments that Elena always heard when she listened to recorded music. It sounded like Max had somehow found a whole orchestra to play just for
a date.
Which would’ve been impossible for a mechanic to afford. It had to have been recorded–maybe even found online somewhere. But, still, Elena was impressed by the obvious care and attention to detail he had shown.
But that wasn’t all. As Max slowly led her in a different direction, Elena began to smell beautiful flowers in bloom.
