It took a few tries to actually get Joshua Miller on the line. Apparently, he had been arguing a court case in front of a judge today. But on the third try, Elena heard Joshua’s voice on the other line.
“Hello?” he asked “is everything okay?”
“Yeah,” Elena said. “Can you get somewhere private?”
“Already done,” Joshua replied.
Massimo gritted his teeth.
“Oh, right,” Elena said, “I’m putting you on speaker phone.” She tapped a button and put her phone on Massimo’s desk. “Massimo is here, too.”
“Evening, Mr Ferraro,” Joshua said neutrally.
Massimo did not return to the greeting.
“So,” Joshua continued, “what’s going on? I assume there’s something you need my help with, right?”
Elena smiled at Joshua’s perceptiveness. “Yes, there is actually,” Elena confirmed.
Quickly, she went over a brief summary of Tyler’s latest scheme and how they suspected he had local help. Massimo occasionally interrupted, adding a detail here and there.
“So,” Elena asked slowly, “is there any chance you can help us find this traitor?”
“Absolutely,” Joshua replied immediately. “I’m actually already help the cops on this case anyway–it’s why I’m still at my office this late.”
Elena glanced at the clock on her phone. It was almost ten pm. With all the chaos of today, Elena hadn’t noticed how late it had gotten.
“However, I want to be clear about one thing,” Joshua continued. “Since I am helping out on this case, I’m not sure how much I’ll be able to help you. A lot of information will have to stay classified since this is an ongoing police case.”
Massimo snorted. Elena glared at him.
“That’s fine,” Elena said calmly. “I never expected you to do anything else. Can you just promise me you’ll tell us one thing?”
Joshua hesitated. “Depends on the one thing,” he replied evenly.
“If the police find out which family helped Tyler, you’ll at least give us that name,” Elena said.
The room grew quiet as no one spoke for a long moment.
“Please, Joshua,” Elena pressed.
“If I give you a prime suspect’s name,” Joshua replied, “you can’t act on that information. You can’t do anything illegal.”

“You have my word,” Elena replied.
Joshua sighed. “Then you have mine.”
Elena smiled, satisfied with what she had promised and got in return. “Have a good night, Joshua,”
“You too,” he replied.
Elena hung up the phone. But for some reason, Masslino’s expression wasn’t matching her own. In fact, Massimo seemed annoyed.
“That’s one more ally on our side,” Elena remarked cheerfully.
“Let’s see if he’s any help,” Massimo replied darkly.
Over the next few days, Elena helped Massimo try to find Tyler’s secret allies throughout New York–in between her usual mafia doctor duties. But things were moving slowly. Neither Elena nor Luca nor even Massimo had made much progress.
