Elena woke up the next morning completely confused. She could still recall her dream from the night before, and it left her feeling odd. Though, in the dream, Elena hadn’t been able to see Max’s face, she was certain it was his voice–yet for some reason, she had called him Massimo?
Why did her brain combine the two of them? Quite honestly, they weren’t anything alike. Massimo was reliable but dangerous and fairly muted with his emotions–Max could be really flaky but wasn’t afraid to get emotional.
Massimo was the Don of All Dons, a man who the criminal world all listened to. Max was just a mechanic–and a mechanic who very clearly had some social anxiety issues. They couldn’t be more different!
Elena turned off her alarm on her phone and looked at the date. Right, later tonight would be the potluck dinner –that had to be why her sleeping mind had combined Massimo and Max! Elena would have to pretend to be Massimo’s wife in public again today.
Elena frowned. She really needed to figure out an end date for this whole ‘pretending to be the Mafia Queen‘ thing. Elena had already felt conflicted about doing this new job, and considering how her relationship with Max was evolving, she was liable to feel even worse soon.
Elena loved getting to see her husband’s more assertive, confident side yesterday. As she got ready for work, all she could think about was when Max might be free to have another date–or, even better, when Max would be confident enough to show her his face.
The work day flew by. Pretty soon, it was time for the potluck dinner. Elena was a little nervous–after all, this party was all a ruse to find which subordinate had leaked information to Tyler.
Luckily, Massimo and Elena could be near each other during the potluck without raising anyone’s suspicions. Together, they wandered around the smallest Ferraro ballroom and greeted every mafia man who arrived.
In reality, Massimo and Elena were judging whether anyone was acting off.
“We’re getting nowhere,” Massimo hissed after an hour or two. “None of my higher ranked subordinates are acting any different from how they usually do.”
Elena frowned. “Do you think none of them did it?”
“If none of them did it, who did?” Massimo asked.
Elena wasn’t sure.
“Let’s split up for now,” Elena suggested. “We’ll cover more ground that way. We can meet up again if we find anything.”
As Elena scanned the crowd of Massimo’s subordinates, one man caught her eye. She knew this man wasn’t anyone special–he held the lowest rank. He was just a normal mafia soldier, one of the many subordinates to the Ferraro family.
He wouldn’t have caught Elena’s attention normally because of this. But she happened to notice that the mafia man would periodically check his phone. As she kept watching, she noticed a pattern.
The man would join a group of already talking people, stay there and participate for a few minutes, and then he’d leave only to look at his phone. Most importantly, he only seemed to check his phone when he was sure no

Elena calmly got Massimo’s attention and told Massimo all of this. “That seems weird, doesn’t it?” Elena asked.
Massimo nodded. He signaled to Luca to discretely get the guards. Within moments, Luca and a few of Massimo’s most loyal guards were nonchalantly leading the mafia man away.
“Let’s see if you’re right,” Massimo told her.
Elena was briefly concerned Massimo might take her to see the man get interrogated. Luckily, Massimo only wanted to go through the man’s possessions. It only took a moment for Luca to get them–even better, he brought them to Massimo’s office so that the two could go through them in peace.
There was the usual stuff–a watch, wallet, and keys. Nothing of interest until they found the man’s phone.
“That wasn’t the one he was texting with,” Elena commented.
Massimo frowned. He looked through the rest of the items Luca had brought over–and then produced a second, more familiar phone.
