Elena looked up at Massimo. “This settles it,” she said. “This subordinate was definitely involved.”

Massimo was no longer smiling. His frown was so deep that Elena was concerned it would never leave Massimo’s face again.

“He was,” Massimo replied. “It looks like he was in charge of faking an emergency on the other side of town- since he knew the other Ferraro soldiers, he knew what would draw them away from Gavino’s front.”

“And then it looks like he returned to help start the fire,” Elena continued. “It looks like Him and Her are likely Tyler and his new woman friend. But I wonder who the other people in this group chat are.”

“It looks like Tyler started the conversation,” Massimo stated. “Which was smart–it makes it harder for us to figure out what other traitors might be working against us.”

Elena could tell Massimo was unhappy. Logically, she knew she shouldn’t press her luck and risk angering him, but she had a promise to keep.

“We should hand the traitor we did find over to Joshua and the cops,” Elena said.

Massimo looked up at Elena. She couldn’t be serious! He was a mafia man–he would never do something like handing over his man, even a disloyal one, to the cops!

“Why the hell should we do that?” Massimo asked.

Elena, to her credit, didn’t back down. “Because it’s our best chance to track down the other traitors,” she argued.

“Think about, Massimo,” Elena continued. “If he’s with the cops, it’ll be harder for Tyler or any other mafia family under his control to find the guy–they’d have to stage a breakout! And if they did something that crazy- or, heck, if they just visit our mole–then we’ll know the identity of who’s working against you as well as solid proof they’re doing it.”

Massimo hated that Elena had a good argument.

“Fine,” Massimo relented, “but only if you can get Joshua to charge my disloyal subordinate with a different crime. If he’s put in jail for suspected arson, everyone will know that we know what Tyler’s doing. We shouldn’t tip off our enemies–they shouldn’t see us coming until it’s too late.”

Elena swallowed hard. “Okay. I’ll call Joshua and see what he can do.”

To Elena’s relief, Joshua agreed to the terms. Within minutes, he was at the Ferraro estate with a few cop cars and officers.

Elena could easily tell Massimo wasn’t happy with this plan. He was still frowning as the cops dragged the traitor away.

The don didn’t cheer up even after Joshua went to greet Elena and Massimo.

“Thanks for doing the right thing and telling us about this guy,” Joshua said amicably.

“Don’t get used to it,” Massimo bit back.

Joshua gave Elena a look. She was tempted to apologize for Massimo’s behavior, but she knew that would just worsen his mood,

“Thanks for helping,” she said instead.

“Any time,” Joshua replied. “Actually, while I’m here, could I talk to you for a moment, Elena? Alone?”

“Sure,” Elena replied.

Massimo’s expression darkened as she and Joshua went down the hallway to a deserted room.

The second they were alone, Joshua’s face grew serious.

“I need to apologize to you, Elena,” he said. “I’m sorry for how everything went down months ago.”

“That?” Elena asked, surprised Joshua was even bringing it up. “It’s fine-”

But Joshua raised a hand. “No, it wasn’t. I pressured you to make choices you didn’t want to, and I want to promise that I’ll never do that again.”

“I understand now that we’re on very different paths,” Joshua continued. “I think I only really understood once I heard you had decided to become Massimo’s Mafia Queen. And I want you to know, out of respect for you, I won’t be going after Massimo.”

“You mean you’ll stop trying to get him thrown in jail?” Elena asked, surprised.

“At least for a while,” Joshua confirmed. “I want to focus on the worst mafia men first. I learned that after talking to an old ex cop–it’s important the order in which you pick your battles.”

“That cop sounds smart,” Elena said.

“Yeah, and even he likes Massimo,” Joshua said, “so I guess I’ll trust both his and your judgment here.” Elena smiled. There was likely only one ex–cop who thought favorably of Massimo–and it would be Gavino.

“Thanks, Joshua.”

“No problem,” Joshua said. “Just one last thing before I go–I trust that you’re on the right path right now. But if the mafia life ever gets too much for you, Elena, know that I’m here and waiting to help you–no matter what you need.”
