Elena smiled as she continued, “Let me help plan the next date!”

Weirdly, Max was quiet for a long moment. Elena wondered if he had somehow managed to leave without her hearing any footsteps.

“Max?” she called. “How does that sound?”

“G–great,” Max stammered enthusiastically. “That’s great! Just, a really, really great idea!”

It was only once Max started speaking that Elena realized how close she had gotten to him. She had only meant to lean on the table a little bit–but it seemed she had over–extended. It felt like Massimo was yelling in her face.

Suddenly, his delayed reaction made sense. Her closeness might’ve triggered his social anxiety and made him too nervous to speak. It was weird how quickly he could go from confident to not–not that Elena had any room to judge. Like her biological mother had once said, everyone has their own struggles they’re dealing with.

As Elena thought this over, she realized she could hear Max’s heartbeat hammering away in the silence. She could also hear someone approaching their table–probably the waitress.

Elena leaned back into her seat just as breakfast was served. She wait for the waitress to leave before she felt along the plate with a fork. It was clumsy and took her a long moment.

“Did you get me a breakfast sandwich?” Elena asked.

“I got us breakfast sandwiches,” Max replied. “I figured after last time, you would enjoy being able to eat on your own.”

Elena’s heart fluttered as she realized just how much thought Max had been putting into these date ideas. That settled it—she had to return the favor. She slowly ate some of her sandwich, thinking over different ideas.

“Oh, how about we see a movie together?” Elena suggested. “I need to get your opinions on some romantic comedies.”

“I’m not sure that would work,” Max said. “You couldn’t be wearing the blindfold so how would we get to see it together?”

Right, even if the focus would be on the movie, seeing a movie together would mean Elena would be able to see Max at her side–and he still wasn’t ready for that yet. Elena gave the idea more thought–there had to be a way to make this work…

“What if we entered the theater at different times,” Elena suggested. “And I could sit one row in front of you.”

Elena waited as Max chewed his sandwich. “Would that still count as a date?” he asked.

“Why wouldn’t it?” Elena countered.

“I could only talk to you if I leaned over,” Max explained, “and you wouldn’t be able to talk to me at all without missing parts of the movie. That doesn’t seem fair. I suppose we could maybe just keep each other on the phone while we watched-”

“Don’t you dare,” Elena scolded. “You’re supposed to turn off your phones in the theater! They have ads about it
