Chapter 244
The rest of breakfast finished up in relative silence. Elena stretched, trying to dispel her negative thoughts.
“We should call the date here,” she suggested. “I want to go see how my half–brother is doing in the hospital.”
“I can drop you off there,” Max offered.
“That would be a little hard with my current outfit,” Elena said, gesturing to her blindfold. “Don’t get me wrong, I would love to keep hanging out with you, but I don’t want to be left on a public New York street like this.
“I completely agree,” Max quickly said, “and I’m sorry for even suggesting that. I’ll just drop you off at your rental then?”
“That’d be awesome,” Elena said.
Elena was so focused on leaving the diner, getting in the car, and making it back to the Ferraro estate that she didn’t realize until Max was already gone that she had never mentioned her family before to him. Weirdly though, he took the information in stride.
Then again, Elena thought, maybe Max thought it’d be rude to ask. She had said her half–brother was in the hospital–that wasn’t the happiest conversation starter.
Elena removed the blindfold and went to the Ferraro estate’s main entrance. As she was about to open the door though, it opened on its own–or rather, Massimo opened the door.
“Oh, Elena, what a coincidence,” Massimo said. “I was just on my out. Did you need anything?”
“No, I’m fine,” Elena responded. “I was actually planning on dropping off a few things and then going to the hospital, so I’m—”
“I can give you a lift,” Massimo offered.
“Sure,” Elena agreed, “as long as you don’t just stay in the hospital parking lot again. I know you have better things to do than wait around for me, so just drop me off and then go your own way.”
“If it’s what my doctor wished,” Massimo agreed. “Go drop off your things and get ready. I’ll warm up the car.”
Elena was glad Massimo had given her the day off. She had wanted to visit her half–brother sooner, but with Tyler’s schemes, she knew it wasn’t exactly the highest priority. After all, Matteo had woken up from his coma and already been cleared for continued treatment.
That didn’t stop her from worrying though. And, judging by the grin Matteo flashed her from his hospital bed, he wasn’t the only one feeling that way.
“You’ve been busy,” he remarked. “I heard from the nurses you visited all the time when I was half–dead. Can’t spare the time for me when I’m awake and alive?”
“First of all, you were in a coma, not dead,” Elena corrected.
Matteo sloppily waved a hand dismissively–it seemed his fine motor skills weren’t back to normal yet. Details, details,” he.complained.
