Less than an hour later, Elena finished recounting all this information to Massimo in his office. She made sure she stayed professional and only told her boss Matteo’s exact words. But inside her heart, Elena was furious.

The more Elena thought about what Matteo told her, the more she was sure her step–mother had been lying to her from the beginning. After all, Elena knew how manipulative her step–mother could be. She knew that woman only ever expressed emotions to lie and trick others.

Yet Elena had believed Alessia. Elena had wanted to have a mother figure back in her life–a mother who actually wanted what was best for her! So she had let herself get tricked.

“I’m sorry,” Elena said suddenly. “I knew what my step–mother was capable of, but I ignored all her flaws anyways. And I can only apologize for the damage she and my father have caused.”

But Massimo didn’t look disappointed. He was wearing his usual calm expression, like Elena hadn’t just admitted that her parents were definitely involved in a grave crime against the Mafia King.

“I was the one who got you and your step–mother back in contact again,” Massimo stated evenly. “So I have as much responsibility in causing this mess as you

do.”

Elena appreciated Massimo’s rock solid demeanor. It helped her focus on what really mattered–solving the new mess they found themselves in.

She wondered briefly if that’s why Massimo always had such a guarded, neutral expression. Did it help him stay focused on fixing things rather than obsess over the problems?

“The good news is that neither my father nor step–mother know about this,” Elena said. “I wonder if I could manipulate Alessia right back because of that. She already tends to think she and my father are the smartest people in any given group, so if she doesn’t know that I’m aware of her ruse, she’ll definitely let down her guard.

Massimo frowned. “But what do we have to gain from you doing that?” he asked sternly. “Because right now, it seems like a lot of danger for you to be in for nothing.”

Elena knew Massimo was right. Her step–mother likely didn’t have any more clues about Tyler’s big plans than Matteo did. While they might be able to get a scrap of information here and there, it was unlikely to lead to anything meaningful.

“I can see the merit in getting back at your enemies,” Massimo continued. “But you shouldn’t put yourself in danger just to spite your step–mother.”

“I still think we should use all our options,” Elena confessed. “But I see your point. We can talk about this more if Tyler tries another one of his schemes.”

“We can discuss what actions are appropriate then,” Massimo corrected. “In the meantime…”

Massimo opened a drawer in his desk and pulled out a letter. He handed it to Elena.

“An invitation came for you,” Massimo said.

It was a party held by Lucilla Abano.

“Which would make them appealing allies for Tyler,” Massimo finished. “Though I don’t think we should count out the Grasso family just yet either.”

Elena turned over the invitation in her hands. “It’s another Women Only Party,” she stated, “which means Don Grasso’s wife is sure to be there–along with many women from branch families of both the Grassos and Abanos.

Massimo sighed. “You should write back and tell Lucilla you’ll attend then,” he said.
