Chapter 245
Elena waited for Matten to continue. If he knew anything about Tyler’s mystery woman, it would be extremely helpful.
The only problem was that Matteo wasn’t talking. He was frowning as he squeezed his eyes closed, his brow furrowed.
“Fuck,” Matteo swore, “just give me a minute… Ah, she had red hair… green eyes…
Elena frowned. This wasn’t any new information.
“Did you get a good look at her face?” Elena pressed.
Matteo glared at her disappointed tone. “Yes,” he hissed, “I know I did. Mornents before the accident are just kinda… fuzzy–just hold on a second.”
“Curly red hair,” Matteo mumbled. “And really bright green eyes…”
Matteo swore again.
Elena did her best to hide her frustrations. Though Matteo had recovered well, he wasn’t invincible. It was just incredibly inconvenient that his worst problems had to be memory ones–especially since he apparently got a clear look at this mystery woman.
“Are you feeling okay?” Elena asked. “Should I call one of the doctors?”
“No,” Matteo replied moodily, “they said to expect as much.”
“Then maybe we should just wait,” Elena suggested. “You might be able to recall more later. But trying to force it isn’t going to do anything but make us both frustrated.
Matteo sighed. “I know I got a clear look at her, Elena,” he said stubbornly. “And… I know I’ve seen her before- and so have you.”
Elena raised an eyebrow at that. “Have I?” she asked.
Matteo nodded. “I remember thinking, ‘I need to tell Elena,‘” her half–brother recalled. “So you have to know this woman somehow…”
Elena grabbed Matteo’s hands, dragging his attention back to her and the present. “I believe you,” she said simply.
“But,” Elena continued, “you don’t need to worry about this. Massimo and are handling it. So take your time, okay?”
The two siblings shared a fond look. Matteo suddenly rolled his eyes.
“You’re one to talk,” he replied. “I’m in the process of getting cleared to go home. I could get released from this shitty hospital any day now–so you don’t need to treat me like I’m some fragile piece of glass.”
Elena chuckled lightly. “You’re impossible to deal with,” she teased. “First you complain about me not paying enough attention and caring about you, and now you’re getting annoyed that I show an ounce of concern.”

“Yeah, well, I changed my mind,” her half–brother declared. “I’ve had enough of being smothered and cared for, thank you very much.”
“Brat.”
“Bitch.”
But there was no heat behind the insults. If anything, there was some concern and worry–and a whole lot of fondness.
Elena glanced at the hospital clock. She would need to get going soon.
“Text me when you have a discharge date,” Elena said. “I can help you get settled back home.”
“Like hell you can,” Matteo snorted. “I still live with Mom and Dad. And we know which side they’re on.”
Elena frowned. Matteo did have a point–the Vitale family had firmly sided with Tyler over Massimo. But Elena had her doubts if anyone besides her father really cared about helping Tyler rise to the top.
“I don’t know about that,” Elena confessed. “Alessia was really concerned when I mentioned how you got injured and she seems like she’s actually happy that I’m having a good time working for Massimo.”
But Matteo just shook his head.
“Mom’s in on it,” he said. “And for someone so choked up about my injuries, she sure was fast to ditch me during her last visit and talk a ‘business‘ call.” Matteo made air quotes around the word ‘business‘—it was a common way for mafia members to secretly talk about mafia work in front of civilians.
“Did you hear anything she said?” Elena pressed.
“A couple things, yeah,” Matteo confirmed. “I don’t know who she was talking to, but she was being overly polite so it was someone higher up than her or Dad. She was talking about sending some kind of video over for payment.”
Elena frowned. What could her step–mother be up to? Elena thought the woman had turned over a new leaf and really changed–but it just might be another one of her tricks.
“And that’s not all,” Matteo continued. “I heard about the big fire at one of Massimo’s fronts, so I asked Mom if she knew anything about it. She just got really dodgy about the whole thing—and I couldn’t even get a good cover story for where she or Dad were when the fire started.”
