Chapter 248
Elena was surprised, but Lucilla just kept talking. She told Elena to go home and get cleaned up–promising that she’d hold a better party to make up for everything.
Elena could tell Lucilla was being honest. She was pretty sure the woman wasn’t lying.
But it was still so odd. Why would Tyler employee two low level servants in his schemes? Tyler normally tried flashier, more dramatic plots.
Elena wondered if Tyler’s mystery woman was to blame.
Massimo was pissed. He arrived at the Abano estate later than he wanted to, so he shoved the traitorous servant at Luca to deal with.
“Take me to the don,” Massimo demanded of the Abano guards. To his surprise, they didn’t put up much of a resistance.
Even better, Don Abano understood why Massimo was pissed. He already had all the information on the scum who tried to hurt Elena, ready and waiting.
Massimo looked it all over. Then he demanded to see the don’s own records–and without a word, Don Abano relented.
Sometimes it was good to have a reputation of trailing blood wherever he went. Massimo certainly appreciated it right now–it saved him a good deal of time.
“It looks like the bastard was stealing money from you,” Massimo declared. “The funds marked ‘for Haley‘ haven’t been received-”
Don Abano swore. “That was money for my first wife’s mausoleum.”
Massimo could understand the man’s sudden anger. Tyler’s people apparently had a thing for messing with the dead and depriving them of grace and respect.
“I’ll need access to every purchase this bastard ever made that was sent to your estate,” Massimo said. “From there, I can probably figure out what he was funneling the money to.”
“You can have whatever you need from me, Don Massimo,” Don Abano said solemnly.
Ordinarily, Massimo would be suspicious of the don–he’d be suspicious of any don in this situation. How could a servant steal so much without the don noticing? Wasn’t it more likely the don was just trying to find a good suspect to pin all his crimes to?
But Massimo wasn’t thinking that now. He could tell that Jacob Abano, though he was remarried, clearly cared about his first wife. Everything from the way the man spoke to how he held himself said as much—Jacob was taking the fact his wife’s memory was being slighted personally.
Massimo wasn’t sure when he became so emotionally aware of other’s feelings. All he knew was that he wouldn’t have noticed all this a few months ago.
“I’ll let you know if I need anything else,” Massimo said briskly, leaving the other don’s sight. He still had a lot
of work to do.

Chap 249
Back at the estate, Elena took her time cleaning up. Only then did she barge into Massimo’s office and get the full story of what had happened.
“We were able to get the servant himself to talk, too,” Massimo continued. “He confessed to everything, We used the stolen money to get everything Tyler needed to burn down Gavino/‘s place and keep us boxy,”
Elena frowned. She had seen how resolved the servant had looked when he was passed off to Mastimo’s men She doubted he would speak willingly on the topic.
And though Elena didn’t like to think about it, she had taken a few hours to clean up once they were all home. There was plenty of time for Massimo to torture the man into a confession.
And though Elena didn’t want to notice it, she could see that Massimo’s usual dress shirt was a little meter. His sleeves were rolled up, like he had been doing a lot of physical work recently. And most tellingly, despite the oncoming cold of the winter settling in, Massimo was missing a jacket.
Was that because he had gotten blood on it? If she looked closely at his hands, would the see blood under the fingernails or bruises starting to form on his knuckles?
Elena pushed these thoughts away. “We should call Joshua then,” Elena suggered
“No need. There’s not a person left to arrest.”
Elena could feel her heart drop at those words. She suddenly couldn’t stand to be in the same room as Mastito
“Well then… I need to go,” she said hurriedly. “I promised to call my husband today, so I’m gonna do that”
As Elena left in a hurry, Massimo frowned. He knew Elena had just lied. She looked frightened
Massimo swore. He wasn’t sure how to fix this.
