Chapter 250
Elena insisted on making handwritten invitations. “It’ll look nicer when I hand them out at the next Women Only party,” Elena explained.
“Or we could just mail them out,” Massimo argued. “Then the families would get the invites a week earlier.” “But having the Mafia Queen personally hand an invite to you makes you more likely to go,” Elena countered.
Massimo eventually relented, on the condition that Elena would make sure all the local dons‘ daughters or wives received the invites promptly.
To make sure this happened, Elena went through her mail and accepted several invitations to more Women Only parties, even the ones not hosted by the Grassos or the Abanos. She needed to make sure everyone got their invites at around the same time, after all–which meant Elena needed to attend quite a few of these events.
By the end of the week, Elena had done almost zero doctor work–but she had done a lot of work befitting the Mafia Queen. It was odd to be taking on such a direct role for the Ferraro family. Though Elena had helped out with other parties and missions for Massimo, this felt different.
This felt more like a sample of what being the real Mafia Queen would be like. And Elena, to her great surprise, found that she didn’t hate it.
Luckily, Elena had a bit of a break in the form of Lucilla Abano’s new party. She was enjoying just sitting on the second level of the ballroom, sipping a glass of red wine, and enjoying the view of truly beautiful interior architecture.
Too bad the other lady guests had decided to ruin the peace and quiet. They had done their best to get Elena involved in their little conversation–though Elena was only paying a little attention to their chatter.
“I can’t believe your father still treats you like that, Iris,” one woman–was her name Meghan or Melissa?-said. The woman turned to Elena, clearly fishing for a reaction.
When Elena said nothing, the woman prodded, “I mean, Miss Elena, isn’t it odd? I can’t imagine your family is anything like that.”
In her mind, Elena sighed. It was clear she wasn’t going to be left alone until she entertained these women. Though the small group of ladies couldn’t have been more than a year or two younger than Elena, the doctor certainly felt like the only adult in the room.
“My father spent more time with his son than me,” Elena said dismissively. “And my step–mother was perfectly fine to leave me to my own devices. So I can’t really speak to how a normal mafia family acts–I can only speak to my own experiences.”
Another woman–Sarah, maybe?-smirked. “I imagine you can’t,” she said harshly. “Isn’t it true your real mother left the mafia?”
The first woman spoke up. “Sarah, you can’t speak of such things. If that were true, it’d be a great shame.”
“It would, wouldn’t it Marissa? That practically ruins the whole family if there’s one scared rat in it.”
The women didn’t outright laugh, but Elena could clearly see their cruel grins. So this was always how the small group of ladies had planned to get their entertainment–by bullying someone else.
Not that Elena really cared. She had heard all of this before. In comparison to the things her own father had said,
this was tame.

“Are you seriously insulting the Mafia Queen’s family?”
Everyone turned around to see the host of the party, Lucilla, standing at the top of the staircase to the second floor. Her face was already red with rage.
“Miss Lucy, you must’ve misheard-”
“The fuck I did,” Lucilla said as she stomped over to Elena and the ladies.
Lucilla stood in front of Elena and glared at the other women. “Give it a shot,” Lucilla dared them. “Explain why you think anything you just said was okay to say.”
