So Elena smiled back.
With all the excitement, she had almost forgotten the mafia don in the room. “Elena,” Massimo stated, voice ice cold, “do you actually know these people?”
Elena knew that tone. It was the tone of the Mafia King, deciding whether someone’s story checked out. Deciding whether to extend peace or total war and destruction.
Elena swallowed. She looked at Sloane–really looked at her, trying her best to find every similarity and difference between the memories of her biological mother.
Elena understood Massimo’s caution. No trick was too dirty for some of their mafia enemies to try. But still, Elena couldn’t help but recognize the woman before her.
Slowly, Elena nodded her head. “I do,” she said confidently. “Sloane is my mother.”
With a small signal from Massimo, the servants came out and prepared a humble meal–humble by a mafia don’s standards, at least. They were ushered into the dining room, leaving the entryway disagreements as a mere memory.
Massimo would like to think it’s because he’s gotten better at playing the kind, caring host. But he knew the real warmth and suddenly friendliness was solely because of Elena’s mother, Sloane.
Sloane was clearly trying to make up for lost time and cement herself in Elena’s life. She smiled and chatted about innocent topics–the weather, the dining room’s furniture, and the food. It was a classic skill of putting people at ease, usually done before talking about bigger, less pleasant topics.
Sloane hadn’t strayed into anything like that though. At least, not yet.
The woman might be Elena’s mother, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t hiding any ulterior motives. And Massimo would rather go to hell than let Elena get crushed by another family member’s betrayal.
Still, Massimo had to admit that Sloane didn’t seem like the usual mafia member or hardened criminal. She was sarcastic and stubborn but overall charming and lovely. Honestly, seeing how Sloane behaved made it very clear where Elena got some of her charming personality from.
Then there was the other stranger–Noah, the rich business and Sloane’s second husband. He could be the brains behind this operation, pushing Sloane to reach out to Elena for nefarious reasons. It wouldn’t be the first time Massimo saw a rich man threaten a woman as a means to an end.
But that didn’t line up with what Massimo saw.
Noah was, quite frankly, a pushover. At least when it came to Sloane. Sure, Massimo might not have noticed given how quiet Noah got during the dinner conversation, but his actions spoke for themselves.
Noticing what food Sloane ate and offering more from his own plate. Flagging down a servant to replace his wife’s silverware, get her another napkin, or refill her drink. The man was very clearly obsessed with this woman.
The two really did appear to be who they said they were. They didn’t seem to be here for some evil plot.
But Massimo refused to let his guard down.
Elena waited as long as she could before demanding a proper explanation from her mother.
“So where were you before this?” Elena pressed. “What happened after you left home?”

“The night I left your father, I made my way to Utali,” Sloane explained. “It was the only place in the US where I was sure none of your father’s friends could find me. I used all my wit and money to get there so I was just scraping by on odd jobs for the longest time…”
Sloane’s eyes found Noah’s, and she smiled. “Then I met Noah, and it was love at first sight. I was intimidated at first, but Noah was so kind-”
“I’m sure the trips around the world helped,” Noah said.
“Trips that only increased when you found out my ex was a mafia man,” Sloane replied with a laugh. “We eventually settled down in California and got married, though we still travel for Noah’s work.”
“Do you now?” Massimo interrupted, turning to Noah. “Judging from the deal you offered me, I’m surprised you’re still in business.”
“Like I said, it’s a special offer,” Noah replied. “And we can talk details later.”
“Over the phone?” Massimo pressed.
“Sure.”
Massimo recited a cell phone number, which Noah confirmed was correct.
“Interesting,” Massimo said, smiling with his teeth. “Since that’s the number that was harassing Elena for a while. Care to explain that, stalker?”
